About us The Man Walk started in Kiama in 2018 with one man deciding to change his morning routine and inviting a few mates to join him.
Today, it is a registered Australian charity and an international grassroots movement, with more than 100 communities giving men a regular opportunity to walk, talk and support one another.
The idea is deliberately simple. There is no membership fee, no judgement, no pressure and no expectation to share. Men can turn up, walk alongside others and be part of a supportive local community.
Behind every Man Walk is a volunteer leader known as a Manbassador. These are the people who welcome new walkers, keep their local walks running and create connection within their communities.
We are now looking for a Head of Community & Operations to make sure those people never feel as though they are walking alone.
About the role
This is a newly created leadership role sitting at the heart of The Man Walk. In practical terms, it is the operational leadership role behind the movement.
It requires someone who can combine the discipline and accountability of an experienced operations leader with the warmth, patience and humility needed to support a volunteer-powered community.
You will become the primary point of connection between the organisation and its network of more than 100 Manbassadors, helping them strengthen their local walks and giving them the communication, resources and practical support they need.
Some communities may need help attracting more walkers. Others may need promotional materials, introductions to potential sponsors or support navigating a local council grant. Sometimes, the most valuable thing you can do will be to pick up the phone, listen to what is happening and help a Manbassador find a practical way forward.
You will also bring structure and coordination to the organisation behind the movement, helping a small, committed team turn ideas into action and keep important projects, events and community initiatives moving.
Reporting to the CEO, you will help establish and support the National Manbassador Leadership Team, working closely with community leaders and specialist contractors across key business functions to drive collaboration, strengthen communication, and deliver organisational priorities.
What you will be here to do
Your role can be summed up in four words:
Listen. Connect. Support. Grow.
You will
- Build genuine, ongoing relationships with Manbassadors across the network
- Understand what is working within each community, what is getting in the way and where practical support is needed
- Help local walks attract and welcome more participants
- Connect Manbassadors with existing marketing resources, sponsorship materials, grant support and community tools
- Help communities identify appropriate local sponsors, partners and council funding opportunities
- Improve communication between The Man Walk, its Manbassadors and the wider community
- Establish and facilitate the National Manbassador Leadership Team, creating shared leadership and giving local communities a stronger voice
- Recognise and celebrate the volunteers who make the movement possible
- Share successful ideas and practical lessons across the network
- Lead the planning and delivery of walk launches, Manbassador camps, community events, fundraising activities and other major experiences
- Support projects from initial idea through to delivery, with transparent ownership, timelines and follow-up
- Improve the systems and processes that keep the organisation coordinated and accountable
- Improve the collection and quality of community participation, engagement and impact data across the network
- Translate community activity into clear reporting and measurable outcomes for the CEO, Board, government, funding partners and other stakeholders
- Coordinate priorities and action tracking through Monday.com and other operational platforms
- Support the effective use of The Man Walk app and digital community tools
- Act as the communication link between the CEO, Manbassadors, specialist contractors and other stakeholders
About you We are less interested in a particular job title or perfectly linear career history than we are in the person behind the application.
You may have worked in community development, operations, volunteer engagement, membership organisations,
events, sporting clubs, local government, the not-for-profit sector or another relationship-led environment.
You may also be an experienced leader who has reached a point where purpose, people and contribution matter more than the next corporate title.
What matters is that you:
- Build trust easily with people from different backgrounds and walks of life
- Are comfortable picking up the phone and starting a genuine conversation
- Can connect authentically with the predominantly male volunteers and communities The Man Walk supports
- Understand how to support volunteers without creating unnecessary complexity
- Listen carefully and turn feedback into practical action
- Have experience coordinating community events, fundraising activities or multi-stakeholder experiences from concept through to delivery
- Follow through on commitments and keep people informed
- Can introduce structure while protecting the grassroots character of the movement
- Can balance empathy and flexibility when supporting volunteers with the discipline required to capture data, meet commitments and deliver measurable outcomes
- Are comfortable working within a small organisation where people contribute beyond narrow position descriptions
- Can move easily between strategic conversations and practical community support
- Understand that community leadership is built through consistency, humility and relationships
- Care deeply about connection, belonging and improving outcomes for men and their communities
This is a remote, work-from-home position, with some travel required to connect with Manbassadors, attend community activities and support events. The position is ideally full-time; however, a 3.5 or 4-day-per-week arrangement may be considered for an exceptional candidate.
How to apply
Please submit your résumé and a cover letter answering the following:
- Why does the mission of The Man Walk matter to you?
- What makes volunteers feel genuinely supported?
- Tell us about a time you brought people, projects and practical delivery together.
Applications will be reviewed as they are received, and we are looking to appoint the right person as soon as possible. Recruitment for this position is being managed by HSE Global People on behalf of The Man Walk.
