About Newmont
Newmont produces metals the world needs - safely, responsibly and with care for people, communities and the environment. With a 100+ year history, we continue to shape the future of mining through innovation and strong operational performance. By joining our inclusive, world-class team, you can help shape the future of mining and make a meaningful difference.
Boddington is a flagship Newmont gold and copper operation in Western Australia, located about 130 kilometres south-east of Perth and 16 kilometres from the rural town of Boddington.
This large open-pit mine is among Australia’s biggest gold producers and in 2021 it became the world’s first gold mine to implement an Autonomous Haulage System (driverless haul trucks) – a pioneering step for safety and innovation.
As a drive-in, drive-out site, our people can live in the south-west region and enjoy a great work-life balance while working with leading technology. Boddington’s team culture is built on a safety-first mindset and continuous improvement. We operate responsibly and take pride in our community partnerships – including working closely with local Traditional Owners – as we create sustainable value in the region.
Your impact
As a Mining Optimisation Analyst, you will play a key role in improving operational performance across one of Australia's largest gold mining operations through analytics, operational insights and continuous improvement initiatives.
Reporting to the Supervisor, Analytics and Optimisation, you will support both autonomous and conventional mining operations by building robust analytical models, performing statistical validation, and translating complex operational datasets into actionable insights that optimise safety, productivity and fleet efficiency.
Working closely with operational stakeholders, control room teams and technical specialists, you will leverage data from fleet management systems, autonomous haulage systems, autonomous drill systems and other operational technologies to identify, validate and deliver measurable business improvements across the Boddington Mining Operation.
You will lead, execute and support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying and quantifying opportunities, developing and implementing data-driven solutions, tracking performance, validating benefits and partnering with operational teams to deliver sustainable business improvements.
As part of our team you will
- Apply Advanced Statistical & Data Science Methods: Perform rigorous statistical analysis including multivariate correlation analysis, regression modelling, statistical significance testing, variance analysis, anomaly detection and predictive modelling to identify and validate operational improvement opportunities.
- Develop Predictive & Diagnostic Analytics: Build, maintain, and refine advanced analytical, statistical and predictive models, clean analytical datasets, and operational decision-support tools that enable proactive, data-driven decision-making.
- Optimise Autonomous & Conventional Mining Performance: Model and analyse operational parameters such as cycle times,
payload variance, delay distributions, match factors, drilling performance, equipment utilisation and operational variability to uncover non-obvious performance improvement opportunities.
- Validate & Measure Continuous Improvement Initiatives and Operational KPIs: Design statistical frameworks and experimental baselines to evaluate continuous improvement outcomes and provide insights into operational performance issues, ensuring performance gains are statistically significant and sustainable.
- Translate Complex Data into Operational Action: Partner with operational control rooms, operational stakeholders, and technology specialists to convert statistical findings into clear, pragmatic recommendations and execution paths.
- Govern Data Pipeline & Quality: Ensure data integrity, model accuracy, and robust data management standards across cloud data platforms (e.g., Databricks) and downstream tools.
- Execute Continuous Improvement Initiatives: Support the identification, prioritisation, implementation and validation of operational improvement initiatives through rigorous performance measurement and benefits tracking.
- Partner Across Mining Operations: Collaborate with Mining Operations, Technical Services, Maintenance, Autonomous Operations and Technology teams to identify opportunities, investigate performance constraints and deliver sustainable business improvements.
Prerequisites for your success in the role Technical & Analytical Capability:
- Advanced Data Science & Statistical Toolkit: Proven experience applying statistical analysis (e.g. correlation analysis, multivariate regression, distributions, significance testing, variance analysis and predictive modelling) to solve real-world industrial or operational problems.
- SQL & Python for Advanced Analytics:
o Strong proficiency in SQL and Python for data extraction, transformation, validation, statistical analysis, analytical model development and automation. o Experience using Python data science libraries such as pandas, numpy, scipy, scikit-learn and statsmodels to analyse large operational datasets and develop analytical solutions.
- Modern Data & Analytics Platforms:
o Practical experience working with large-scale operational datasets using Databricks, PySpark, Snowflake, MS SQL Server, or enterprise data lakes. o Experience developing and maintaining analytical datasets, data pipelines and semantic models supporting operational reporting and advanced analytics.
- Data Visualisation & Decision Support: Ability to translate complex analytical findings into clear, business-ready insights through Power BI, Python visualisation libraries (e.g. seaborn, plotly), or similar platforms.
Education & Experience:
- Tertiary Qualification: Degree in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Mining Engineering, or a highly quantitative discipline.
Experience: o 3-5 years' experience in mining analytics, operational analytics, industrial analytics, data science, quantitative analysis, or a related analytical discipline.
o Demonstrated history of delivering measurable business improvements through data-driven investigations and analytical problem solving.
o Experience working within mining, resources, manufacturing, logistics, fleet management, autonomous systems, or other operational technology environments is highly desirable.
o Experience analysing large operational datasets to identify performance drivers, validate improvement opportunities, quantify business impacts, and support operational decision-making.
o Exposure to mining operational technologies, including Autonomous Haulage Systems (AHS), autonomous drill systems, fleet management platforms (e.g. MineStar, Modular, Jigsaw), equipment telemetry systems, machine guidance systems, or related mining technology environments is highly desirable.
o Exposure to fleet telemetry, equipment positioning systems, geospatial analytics, machine guidance systems, or spatial data analysis is highly desirable.
o Experience partnering with operational stakeholders to identify opportunities, influence decision-making, and implement sustainable business improvements.
What Success Looks Like
This role requires an individual capable of moving beyond descriptive reporting to identify, validate and quantify operational improvement opportunities through advanced analytical techniques. The successful candidate must be comfortable challenging assumptions, testing hypotheses, and translating complex data into actionable business outcomes.
Success in this role will be measured not by the volume of reporting produced, but by the ability to uncover meaningful operational insights, influence decision-making, and deliver measurable improvements in safety, productivity, fleet performance and operational efficiency.
Work Environment & Advantages
This role operates on a 5/2, 4/3 roster and is based at Boddington Gold Mine, one of Australia's largest open-pit gold mining operations.
Working within the Analytics and Optimisation team, you will collaborate closely with Mining Operations, Autonomous Operations, Technical Services, Maintenance and Technology stakeholders to deliver data-driven insights that improve productivity, optimise fleet performance and support operational decision making across the mining value chain.
This is an opportunity to work at the intersection of mining operations, analytics and continuous improvement, applying advanced analytical techniques and modern data platforms to solve complex operational challenges and drive measurable business outcomes.
Village accommodation is available for the successful candidate, with the option to live locally and commute daily under a Drive In / Drive Out (DIDO) arrangement.
