About the opportunity
Steel Line Garage Doors is seeking a Product Engineer. The Product Engineer is responsible for delivering engineering projects from concept through to implementation, working closely with the Engineering Manager and cross-functional teams. This is a hands-on engineering role requiring practical involvement in product design, prototyping, testing, manufacturing support and continuous improvement.
The role combines technical engineering expertise with project delivery responsibilities to ensure projects are completed safely, on time, within budget and to the required quality standards. The Product Engineer will actively contribute to research and development, product innovation and the continual improvement of manufacturing processes and existing product lines.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Engineering Project Delivery
- Deliver engineering projects from concept, design and development through to production implementation.
- Plan, coordinate and execute engineering activities to achieve project objectives within agreed timelines.
- Monitor project progress, identify risks and implement corrective actions where required.
- Prepare project schedules, progress reports and technical documentation.
- Work collaboratively with production, procurement, sales and quality teams to ensure successful project outcomes.
- Provide regular project updates to the Engineering Manager and key stakeholders.
- Assist in commissioning, installation and validation of new products and manufacturing processes.
Product Design & Development
- Design and develop new products and improve existing product designs using sound engineering principles.
- Produce detailed 3D CAD models, manufacturing drawings and engineering documentation.
- Evaluate alternative design solutions considering functionality, manufacturability, quality, cost and safety.
- Conduct engineering calculations, design reviews and technical evaluations.
- Drive product innovation through research, prototyping and testing.
- Maintain accurate engineering drawings, specifications and revision control.
Hands-On Engineering & Testing
- Take a practical,
hands-on approach to product development and engineering problem solving.
- Build, assemble and evaluate prototypes.
- Conduct laboratory and field testing of products and components.
- Investigate product failures and determine root causes using structured engineering methodologies.
- Recommend and implement engineering improvements based on testing outcomes.
- Support manufacturing during product introduction and production improvements.
- Assist with factory trials and validation of new processes.
Manufacturing & Continuous Improvement
- Work closely with production teams to improve manufacturing efficiency and product quality.
- Develop and maintain accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs), manufacturing specifications and work instructions.
- Identify opportunities for cost reduction, waste elimination and process optimisation.
- Support Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
Technical Leadership & Communication
- Participate in project planning meetings and engineering design reviews.
- Communicate effectively with suppliers, customers and internal stakeholders.
- Provide technical guidance to production and customer support teams.
- Liaise with suppliers regarding component selection, product quality and technical specifications.
- Respond to technical enquiries from branches, distributors and customers.
- Support the Engineering Manager in achieving departmental objectives.
Quality, Compliance & Safety
- Ensure products comply with relevant Australian Standards, legislative requirements and customer specifications.
- Maintain compliance with company quality systems and engineering procedures.
- Ensure engineering activities comply with Workplace Health and Safety requirements.
- Participate in product risk assessments and design reviews.
- Support quality investigations and implementation of corrective actions.

Position Specification
Essential
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design or related discipline.
- Up to five years' experience in a product development or manufacturing engineering role.
- Experience delivering engineering projects from concept through implementation.
- Strong practical engineering and problem-solving skills.
- Experience in product design, testing and manufacturing support.
- Ability to manage multiple engineering projects simultaneously.
- Solid organisational and project planning skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team.
- Strong analytical and decision-making capability.
Desirable
- Advanced SolidWorks CAD experience.
- Experience with sheet metal, fabrication and manufacturing processes.
- Knowledge of Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
- Experience with ERP/MRP systems.
- Knowledge of Australian Standards and compliance requirements.
- Experience in product testing and validation.
- Continuous Improvement or Lean Manufacturing experience.
- Project management experience.
