Job Overview
As Director of Engineering at Freelancer (ASX: FLN), you will lead engineering for category‑defining platforms such as Freelancer.com, Escrow.com, and LoadShift, powering over 85 million users globally.
Responsibilities
- Build and scale high‑performance engineering teams that ship production code multiple times daily.
- Drive technical vision and execution, partnering with teams to develop roadmaps, define delivery goals, and achieve them within aggressive timelines while maintaining reliability at Internet scale.
- Architect impactful solutions, collaborating with senior architects to design technical plans that solve complex distributed‑system challenges across messaging, payments, translations, and notification systems processing millions of events hourly.
- Lead through influence, communicating effectively with stakeholders from product managers to the C‑suite, translating technical complexity into business value.
- Elevate engineering excellence by establishing and practicing world‑class habits, maintaining high standards of software quality through code review, testing discipline, and continuous learning.
- Optimize across constraints, working closely with product managers and cross‑functional teams to achieve the best outcomes given competing priorities of speed, quality, and technical debt management.
- Cultivate a championship culture centered on company values, empowering engineers to take charge, improve daily, leverage data, and perform like a qualified sports team.
Qualifications
- Leadership experience managing and scaling development teams,
with a proven track record of building high‑performing engineering organisations that consistently deliver business‑critical systems.
- Internet‑scale engineering expertise, having built and operated large‑scale web software serving millions of users across modern frontend stacks (Angular/React/Vue) and distributed backend systems.
- Agile delivery mastery in continuously shipping environments with multiple deploys per day.
- Technical depth that earns respect, able to engage with senior architects on technical plans and designs.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to articulate technical strategy, influence stakeholders, and mentor engineers.
- Ownership mindset, demonstrating self‑management and accountability for outcomes.
- Learning velocity, with a track record of rapidly acquiring new technologies and applying them to production challenges.
- Problem‑solving creativity, combining troubleshooting skills with innovative thinking.
- Academic foundation with a tertiary degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; MSc or PhD is a plus.

- Cloud computing mastery, preferably AWS, with experience architecting for scalability, reliability, and cost optimisation.
- Deep expertise in SOA, microservices, and containerisation using Docker, Kubernetes, and modern orchestration tools.
