Avweld Australasia Pty Ltd is a privately owned manufacturing and maintenance engineering company based in Laverton North in the western suburbs of Melbourne, specialising in wear prevention for industrial equipment and components. Operating since 1985, the company combines materials engineering expertise with large-scale manufacturing capacity. Avweld's core technologies include laser cladding, HVOF thermal spray, PTA weld overlays, machining, grinding, and advanced composite and carbide coating solutions. The business delivers key products such as rotary valves, pumps, wear plates, and a wide range of wear parts. Avweld serves industries including pulp and paper, recycling, mining and mineral processing, concrete and cement, steel, and timber and wood products.

Role Description

The Workshop Manager is a full time, on-site role based in Melbourne, VIC, responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations within the manufacturing and maintenance workshop. This position manages workflow planning, job scheduling, and resource allocation to ensure projects are completed safely, on time, and to quality standards. The role includes supervising and mentoring workshop team members, coordinating equipment maintenance, and ensuring compliance with workplace health and safety procedures. The Workshop Manager collaborates with engineering, sales, and customer service teams to align workshop output with client requirements and production targets.



This role also involves continuous improvement of workshop processes, cost control, and accurate reporting on performance, timelines, and inventory.

Qualifications

- Strong workshop leadership and people management skills, including supervision, team coordination, and performance development.
- Experience in manufacturing or maintenance engineering environments, ideally with exposure to welding, thermal spray, machining, and materials engineering.
- Demonstrated ability in production planning, job scheduling, workflow optimization, and resource management.
- Sound understanding of safety regulations, risk management, and safe work practices in an industrial workshop.
- Ability to read engineering drawings, interpret technical specifications, and ensure adherence to quality standards.
- Proficiency in using workshop management systems or ERPs, basic computer literacy, and accurate documentation skills.
- Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and troubleshooting abilities for equipment, process, and quality issues.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills for working with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders.
- Trade qualification in fitting, machining, welding, or a related discipline; formal leadership or supervisory training is an advantage.
- Previous experience as a workshop manager, supervisor, or team leader in heavy industry, mining, or similar sectors is highly regarded.
