This is a hands‑on leadership role responsible for carrying out advanced repairs, modifications, diagnostics and servicing of Council’s fleet, including heavy vehicles, fixed and mobile plant and specialised equipment. As a senior member of the team, you will provide technical leadership, guidance and support to mechanics and apprentices, coordinating workflow and ensuring maintenance activities are completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with manufacturer specifications, legislative requirements and Council policies. More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Lead and coordinate daily workshop operations, allocating work and supporting the efficient delivery of fleet maintenance services.
- Perform advanced diagnostics, repairs, servicing and maintenance on Council’s heavy vehicles, plant and specialised equipment.
- Undertake field servicing, breakdown response and emergency repairs as required.
- Ensure compliance with AIS, HVIS, legislative and safety requirements, including inspections and record keeping.
- Review and complete work orders, purchase orders, inspections and maintenance documentation.
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring and guidance to mechanics and apprentices.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of maintenance systems, processes and workshop performance.
- Promote a strong safety culture while ensuring fleet reliability, operational efficiency and minimal downtime. The successful applicant requires extensive experience maintaining and repairing heavy vehicles, plant and equipment. You enjoy sharing your knowledge,
mentoring others and leading by example to achieve high‑quality outcomes robust communication and teamwork skills.
To be successful in this position you will need:
- A trade qualification in Automotive Heavy Vehicle Mechanics - Heavy Vehicle Inspection Certificate (HVIS) - Authorised Inspection Station (AIS) Certification - Extensive experience in the maintenance and repair of heavy vehicles, plant, and specialised equipment.
- Demonstrated experience in advanced fault finding, diagnostics, and complex mechanical and auto‑electrical repairs.
- Strong knowledge of heavy vehicle systems, including engines, transmissions, hydraulics, and electronic control systems.
- Proven ability to lead, mentor, and support a team in a workshop environment.
- Sound understanding of legislative compliance requirements, including AIS and HVIS operations.
- Experience using maintenance management systems, diagnostic equipment, and electronic inspection tools.
- Excellent problem‑solving, communication, and organisational skills.
- Commitment to workplace health and safety and continuous improvement.
- Current and maintained HC Drivers Licence or willing to obtain It will be highly favourable if you possess any of the following:
- Four years or more of relevant hands‑on experience in a similar role or industry.
- Knowledge of the role, functions, and responsibilities of Local Government The appointment will be in accordance with the Local Government (State) Award and Parkes Shire Council's policies and conditions of employment. The role has been evaluated as being Grade 12 of the Council's salary structure with a commencing salary of $82,592.32 ($41.80 to $48.07 per hour). The commencing salary will be determined based on the qualifications,
skills and experience of the successful candidate. In addition, an Adverse Working Conditions Allowance of $20.29 per week will apply.
