Salary range Grade 5: $106,845 - $118,057 (this range is subject to increase following current EBA negotiations)

Challenging and intellectually stimulating legal work The Legal Team plays a pivotal role in supporting the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) to deliver its regulatory responsibilities and uphold public confidence in the teaching profession. Providing specialist legal expertise across complex investigations, disciplinary proceedings, litigation and regulatory decision-making, the team works at the heart of matters that protect the safety and wellbeing of children and young people while maintaining the integrity of Victoria's education sector.

About the role

Reporting to the Legal Manager within the Qualified Conduct Branch, you will provide strategic and high-level legal advice across VIT's regulatory functions.

As a Senior Lawyer, you will be at the forefront of VIT's regulatory work, providing expert legal advice on complex and sensitive matters, leading disciplinary and prosecutorial proceedings, and influencing decisions that have a direct impact on the teaching profession.

This is a senior role requiring exceptional legal judgement, advocacy skills and the ability to manage complex and often sensitive matters from initial assessment through to litigation and resolution.

Key Responsibilities:

- Provide high-level legal advice on complex regulatory, administrative, disciplinary and statutory matters that support VIT's regulatory functions.
- Conduct suitability and risk assessments relating to registration applicants, notifications, complaints and concerns about registered teachers.




- Manage and prosecute complex disciplinary proceedings and offences under the Education and Training Reform Act 2006.
- Represent VIT in disciplinary hearings, Magistrates' Court proceedings, VCAT matters and other tribunals or courts, including undertaking appearance work where required.
- Prepare high-quality legal documents, including allegations, submissions, witness briefs, hearing materials, reports and recommendations for senior leaders and committees.
- Provide strategic legal input into policy development, legislative reform initiatives and organisational projects, exercising sound professional judgement on complex issues.
- Mentor and support junior lawyers while collaborating across VIT to deliver effective regulatory outcomes and organisational objectives.

About you

You are an experienced legal practitioner who thrives in a complex regulatory environment and enjoys balancing strategic advice, advocacy and litigation work. You bring sound judgement, resilience and the ability to confidently navigate sensitive matters while maintaining a strong focus on public interest outcomes.

- At least 5 years' post-admission experience, ideally within regulatory, government, disciplinary, administrative or prosecutorial environments.




- Extensive experience providing high-level legal advice on complex matters involving administrative, civil, disciplinary and criminal law.
- Strong advocacy skills with demonstrated experience appearing in hearings, tribunals or courts.
- Exceptional analytical, organisational and problem-solving capabilities.
- Strong risk management awareness and strategic thinking skills.
