About the Team The School of Mathematics, Statistics, Chemistry and Physics comprises 26 academic staff and is expected to grow. It delivers its own undergraduate programmes (BSc Mathematical Sciences and BSc Physical Sciences) and a Graduate Diploma in Extractive Metallurgy. The School also plays a key role in service teaching, providing Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematical Science units across the University.
Its undergraduate majors (Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics and Statistics) are also taken as second majors by students from other degrees. In addition, the school contributes significantly to Data Analytics, Forensic Chemistry, and Secondary Education majors. Research in the School tends to be applied and interdisciplinary.
All academics across the school have active research projects both within and outside their subdisciplines. Research projects span key industries of mining and mineral processing, agriculture and food, human and animal health, environmental and sustainability. Our academics are also engaged with their respective National Societies.

Role A Lecturer (Level B) academic will undertake independent teaching and research in their discipline or a related area. In research, scholarship, or teaching, a Level B academic will make an independent contribution through qualified practice and expertise and coordinate and/or lead the activities of other staff, as appropriate to the discipline. They will normally contribute to teaching at undergraduate, honours, and postgraduate level, engage in independent scholarship and/or research and/or professional activities appropriate to their profession or discipline, and undertake administration primarily relating to their activities at the institution.
A Senior Lecturer (Level C) academic will make a significant contribution to the discipline at the national level. They will make original contributions that expand knowledge or practice in their discipline and play a major role or provide significant leadership in scholarly, research,
and professional activities relevant to the profession, discipline, and/or community. They may also perform full academic responsibilities and related administration for the coordination of a large award programme or multiple smaller award programmes of the institution.
Key Responsibilities - Contribute to the teaching, research, and service activities of the discipline of Statistics within the School of Mathematics, Statistics, Chemistry & Physics (MSCP), while also supporting and advancing the University’s programmes in Data Science.
- Deliver high‑quality teaching in Statistics and Data Science at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, covering core statistical areas such as probability, statistical inference, modelling, statistical computing, data analysis, and reproducible workflows.
- Develop, coordinate, and continually improve units and programmes, and collaborate with other schools on teaching.
- Maintain a strong research programme in Statistics, producing high‑quality outputs and contributing to multidisciplinary, data‑intensive projects focused on study design, modelling, and advanced statistical methods.
- Collaborate across Statistics, Data Science, and other relevant disciplines to advance data‑driven research.
Qualifications &
Experience A PhD in Statistics or a closely related discipline with demonstrated rigorous training in statistical theory, modelling, and inference. Evidence of an emerging (lecturer) or established national (senior lecturer) research profile in Statistics or a related area, demonstrated through high‑quality outputs, competitive funding,
HDR supervision, collaborations, and invitations. Demonstrated ability to deliver engaging undergraduate and/or postgraduate units in Statistics and/or Data Science, including statistical inference and modelling. Capacity to contribute to contemporary curricula in Statistics and Data Science, including statistical computing, data analysis, and reproducible practices. Demonstrated computational skills relevant to modern statistical and data science practice (e.g., R, Python).
What We Offer Continuous, full‑time employment with remuneration as follows:
- Lecturer (Level B): $115,512 – $136,831 plus 17% employer superannuation contributions.
- Senior Lecturer (Level C): $141,088 – $162,403 plus 17% employer superannuation contributions.
