Position Description – Software Engineer (Full-Stack)

Position Title: Software Engineer (Full-Stack),

Location: Remote / Sydney / Wollongong, New South Wales

Reports to: Manager - Digital & AI

Unit: Secora Garage

Employment Type: Fixed Term Contract – with the option to move to fulltime

About Secora

Secora is a leading asset management improvement and implementation company, specialising in productivity enhancement and change across diverse sectors including defence, resources, and energy generation. Our expertise in knowledge transfer, process analysis, optimisation, training, and process design enables our clients to achieve sustainable, measurable improvements.

The Secora Garage is our dedicated innovation space, where we work alongside blue-ribbon clients to rapidly design, prototype, and implement industrial AI solutions that deliver real-world operational value in complex environments.

The Chance

We're looking for a mid-level Software Engineer (around 4-5 years' experience) to join the Secora Garage team delivering a complex project for an oil & gas company. You'll work alongside Asset Specialists and AI engineers to build full-stack solutions that support two Pilot products on an attractive remuneration package.

Purpose of the Role

The Software Engineer will join an embedded team within Secora Garage to design, build, and deliver full-stack software solutions for the Client. This role goes beyond delivering to a spec — you'll need to understand end-user and organisational needs well enough to help frame problems and requirements, then deliver the user stories and functionality defined for the platform, working closely with Asset Specialists and AI engineers as you get up to speed on unfamiliar domains such as SAP, knowledge graphs, and answer set programming.

What You'll Do

• Work onsite / remotely with a small team based out in Wollongong, New South Wales.

- Design and build full-stack features across Python and React, backed by solid ETL and SQL work.
- Develop and maintain data pipelines and integrations on Azure, our primary cloud platform.
- Use agentic coding tools (e.g. Copilot, Claude Code) effectively — as an accelerant,

not a substitute for judgement — and collaborate with teammates using the same tools.
- Form and contribute your own view on solution design, rather than only implementing what's specified.
- Work closely with Asset Specialists and AI engineers to build capability in unfamiliar domains — SAP Plant Maintenance, emerging AI methods, knowledge graphs, and answer set programming.
- Operate as part of a small, tight-knit team: communicate openly, give and receive feedback, and raise blockers early.

What We're Looking For

Core skills (a must)

- Full-stack software engineering: Python, React, Git/GitHub, and solid ETL/SQL skills.
- Cloud platform experience (we run Azure, but experience on any major cloud is transferable).
- Effective use of agentic coding tools (e.g. Copilot, Claude Code) — able to use them well without offloading judgement, and to collaborate with others using the same tools.
- Solution design instinct — someone who forms a view on what the solution needs to do, not just delivers what they're told.
- Comfortable in a small team: open communication, gives and receives feedback, raises blockers early.
- Resourceful and self-directed.
- Willingness to dive into unfamiliar territory — genuine openness to learning domains like SAP, emerging AI methods, knowledge graphs, and answer set programming, supported by Asset Specialists and AI engineers.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver the user stories and functionality defined for the Project.

- Help frame problems and requirements by understanding end-user and organisational needs, not just executing a brief.
- Build and maintain data pipelines, APIs, and ETL processes integrating operational and enterprise data sources.
- Write clean, well-documented, full-stack code across front-end (React) and back-end (Python) components.

- Use agentic coding tools responsibly, keeping human judgement and review central to the process.
- Support Pilot delivery as required, through to build phases.
- Collaborate with Asset Specialists, AI engineers, and other developers to define and implement technical solutions.
- Participate in Agile ceremonies — stand-ups, sprints, and retrospectives.

Essential Experience & Skills

• Around 4-5 years' experience in full-stack software engineering.

- Strong Python and React skills, with solid ETL and SQL capability.
- Experience with Git/GitHub and standard version control workflows.
- Practical experience on a major cloud platform (Azure preferred; AWS/GCP experience transferable).
- Demonstrated effective, judgement-led use of agentic coding tools such as Copilot or Claude Code.
- Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Desirable Experience & Skills

Technical stack (can be picked up on the job):

- Azure Cloud Platform.
- Azure Foundry (AI Ops).
- Databricks.

Domain & sector knowledge (desirable but not required):

- SAP Plant Maintenance modules.
- Engineering / oil & gas knowledge.
- Answer set programming.
- Knowledge graphs.
- Agents (Hermes).

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or equivalent practical experience.

Key Attributes for Success

• Genuine curiosity and willingness to learn in fast-paced, real-world projects.

- Instinct for solution design — forms a view on what's needed rather than just delivering to spec.
- Comfort operating in unfamiliar technical and domain territory, with support from specialists.
- Strong collaborator in a small, multidisciplinary team.
- Resourceful, self-directed, and proactive about raising blockers early.

Scope

Understanding end-user and organisational needs well enough to help frame problems and requirements, plus delivering the user stories and functionality defined for the project.

Duration

6 months initially with the chance for the right team member to move to fulltime employment.
