Purpose of the Role
The Treasurer provides financial governance and oversight to ensure Still Aware remains financially sustainable, accountable and compliant with all regulatory requirements.
The Treasurer works closely with the Chief Operating Officer, bookkeeper/accountant and external auditor to support strong financial management while recognising that operational financial management remains the responsibility of management.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor the financial health and sustainability of the organisation.
- Review monthly financial reports and present financial updates to the Board.
- Assist the Board to understand the organisation's financial position.
- Monitor organisational performance against approved budgets.
- Review financial forecasts and cash flow.
- Ensure adequate financial controls are maintained.
Governance and Compliance
- Support compliance with ACNC, ASIC (where applicable), ATO and other financial reporting obligations.
- Assist in ensuring appropriate financial policies and procedures are maintained.
- Support the annual audit or financial review process.
- Liaise with external auditors, accountants and financial advisers where required.
- Monitor financial risks and recommend mitigation strategies.
Strategic Financial Leadership
- Provide advice on financial strategy and long-term sustainability.
- Support development of annual budgets.
- Assist the Board in evaluating significant financial decisions.
- Contribute to financial planning for strategic initiatives and organisational growth.
- Promote responsible stewardship of charitable funds.
Board Responsibilities
- Present financial reports in a clear and understandable manner.
- Provide recommendations on financial matters requiring Board approval.
- Support other Directors to understand financial information.
- Participate in Board discussions and strategic planning.
Relationship with Management
- Work collaboratively with the COO regarding budgets, forecasts and financial reporting.
- Provide governance oversight without becoming involved in day-to-day financial administration.
- Support continuous improvement of financial systems and reporting processes.
Skills and Experience
The Treasurer should ideally possess:
- Qualifications or significant experience in accounting, finance or business.
- Understanding of not-for-profit financial management.
- Experience interpreting financial statements.
- Knowledge of governance and regulatory obligations.
- Robust analytical and problem-solving skills.
- High ethical standards and integrity.
Expected Time Commitment
- Attendance at all Board meetings.
- Review monthly financial reports before meetings.
- Participation in Finance, Audit or Risk Committees where applicable.
- Attendance at annual budget planning and audit meetings.
- Additional time during the annual audit and budgeting process.
