Designated Role

This is a designated position established as a special measure under section 12 Equal Prospect Act 2010. Only Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants are eligible to apply.

About the Role

The Ranger position will be responsible for the on-the-ground execution of BGLC’s responsibilities to care for Country in the Wotjobaluk Nations’ Recognition & Settlement Agreement Area. This role will maintain sites, ensuring the wellbeing of the ecosystem and built environment, safety and suitability for visitors, and the following of relevant procedures and guidelines by all visitors, including exercising the statutory functions of Aboriginal Heritage Officer.

Rangers will also be deployed on an as-required basis as part of fire response actions, and must be willing to undertake remote works deployments on Country.

The role will require ability to work independently and as part of a team, follow instructions and guidelines and serve as a point of contact and representative of BGLC at these sites.

Key Responsibilities

- Attain and perform the statutory role of Aboriginal Heritage Officer, ensuring cultural heritage at sites is protected
- Maintain facilities and infrastructure such as paths, signage and amenities at sites to ensure their safety and good function
- Monitor and flora and fauna at sites and undertake control work to ensure environmental health




- Act as a mentor to junior rangers in the team, offering guidance and demonstrating exemplary performance
- Provide guidance and information to site visitors to facilitate appreciation and respect for its cultural and natural character
- Collect data to contribute to reporting on the status of sites
- Participate in emergency response in collaboration with Forest Fire Management, maintaining required accreditation

Key Selection Criteria

- Have, or be willing to obtain with BGLC support:
- Certificate III in Conservation & Land Management
- Certificate IV in Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management
- Certificate IV in Enforcement & Compliance
- Aboriginal Heritage Officer certification
- Accreditation to participate in DEECA fire response
- Probationary Driver’s Licence

- Understanding of and experience with Aboriginal Cultural Heritage in Victoria
- Leadership, discretion and work ethic to guide junior members of the ranger team
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team to carry out established guidelines
- Ability to work weekends or in remote locations as appropriate and required
- Friendly and professional manner to engage with the public and other visitors to sites constructively, providing advice and direction
- Physical fitness to safely undertake extensive fieldwork in challenging conditions, including emergency response conditions
