Legislation and Legal Policy
Darwin, Northern Territory
One ongoing full time position is available

The Legislation and Legal Policy Unit provides strategic legal and justice-related policy advice to the Northern Territory Government. The Unit works across criminal, civil and regulatory law within the Attorney-General’s portfolio, supporting the development, review and implementation of legislation and providing advice to the Attorney-General, other Ministers and Government.

This role is ideally suited to a junior lawyer at the early stages of their career who is looking to build experience in legal policy and government. Under guidance and supervision, you will contribute to providing high-quality legal and policy advice to Ministers, government agencies and other stakeholders. You will assist in researching and analysing legal issues, developing policy options, and supporting the preparation of less complex legislative amendments.

You will work as part of a supportive team environment, gaining exposure to how legislation is developed and how government decisions are informed. The role involves preparing transparent and well-structured written materials, including briefings, correspondence and Cabinet submissions, as well as contributing to discussions and liaising with stakeholders in a professional manner.

As you develop in the role,

you will build your knowledge of relevant areas of law and government processes, while managing your work priorities and meeting deadlines. You will be supported to take responsibility for the quality and accuracy of your work and to grow your skills in legal analysis, communication and policy development.

We are seeking a motivated and adaptable early-career lawyer who is admitted as an Australian legal practitioner and is eligible to obtain a local practising certificate. You will have at least 12 months’ experience in legal practice or a related field, along with developing skills in research, analysis and written communication. An ability to manage your workload, work collaboratively, and communicate clearly will be important, as will a genuine interest in public law and policy.

A commitment to professionalism, ethical practice and accountability is essential in this role. Experience or familiarity with Northern Territory legislation is desirable, but not essential, and you will be supported to build this knowledge on the job.

This is an excellent opportunity to start your career in a unique area of legal practice, gain insight into government and legislative processes, and contribute to meaningful legal and policy outcomes for the Northern Territory community.
