The Royal Australian Mint is a small government agency is asmall government agency working within the Commonwealth GovernmentPortfolio of the Treasury. The Mint is a non-corporate CommonwealthEntity and is listed under the Public Governance Performanceand Accountability Act 2013 (PGPA Act). The Mint is also covered by the Public Service Act 1999 (Cth) (PsAct).

- Coin making - polishing, laser frosting, 3D engraving,Physical Vapour Deposition hard coating, chrome plating, diesinspection and collars manufacture.
- Coin Sculpting - design coins, medals, medallions, andtoken, etc.
- Graphic Design - design coin packaging materials,exhibition graphics, etc.
- Engineering - technical support and manufacturingoperations.
About the Branch
The Mint Systems and Quality Branch supports the Mint's missionand purpose by optimising the interactions between systems, peopleand equipment in pursuit of health, safety, environment and quality(HSEQ) outcomes alongside organisational performance. We do this bydeveloping and maintaining contemporary practices and support theorganisation to apply them in their work activities.
We develop and maintain the Integrated Management System - aunified framework with the intent to streamline processes, focus onimproving performance and achieving compliance. We apply ourtechnical expertise to develop and maintain management practices,support the workforce in their use and analyse their performancefor improvement. Our technical domains are risk health and safety,product quality and environment.
About the Role
The Senior Environment and Sustainability Officer is responsiblefor providing guidance and expertise on environment management,compliance and sustainability practices at the Mint within thededicated Workplace Team. The scope of responsibilities of theEnvironment Team includes waste management, hazardous chemicals,air quality, water quality and control, energy efficiency andemissions reduction which provides opportunities for the successfulcandidate to broaden their experience in comprehensiveenvironmental management.
The Senior Environment and Sustainability Officer promotesenvironmentally responsible sustainable work practices across theMint. This includes supporting the implementation of the Mint'senvironmental management procedures, coordination of the Mint'senvironmental monitoring program, and providing subject matterexpertise towards projects within the Mint's business plan.
The Senior Environment and Sustainability Officer also projectmanages the emissions reduction plan (ERP) and works incollaboration with the Facilities Manager and the EnvironmentManager to develop and achieve the ambitions of the ERP.
The Duties
The duties of this position include:
- Managing the implementation of the ERP in support of theAustralian Government Net Zero in Government Operations (NZGO)Strategy.
- Liaising with the Department of Finance (DoF) ClimateAction in Government Operations (CAiGO) team to ensure theMint's operations are aligned to the requirements of the NetZero in Government Operations Strategy.
- Ensure all environment and sustainability related reporting(e.g. GHG emissions reporting) is completed by applicabledeadlines and provided internally for reporting purposes (e.g.annual report, CAiGO and the Environmental ProtectionAuthority).
- Performing data analysis and preparing reports, inclusiveof greenhouse gas (GHG) emission calculations, to assess theMint's environmental risk profile and performance againstlegislative requirements.
- Contributing to the continual review and improvement of theMint's Integrated Management System (IMS) to ensure compliancewith the ISO14001 standard. Liaising and developingrelationships with internal and external stakeholders includingregulators and auditors.
- undertaking investigations and audits of the Mint'senvironmental management system, including work areinspections, incident reporting, and supporting externalaudits.
- Overseeing environmental monitoring programs, includingmanaging specialist contractors, reviewing lab results andcontractor reports. This may include procurement and contractmanagement in accordance with Commonwealth ProcurementRules.
- Maintaining knowledge of relevant Australian Government andAustralian Capital Territory environmental frameworks, targetsand obligations and assisting in the implementation of thesee.g. APS Net Zero, Climate Risk and Opportunity ManagementProgram, National Environment Protection Measures reporting andthe National Waste Policy.
Security
This position requires a Negative Vetting 1 security clearance.The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain aclearance at this level.
Qualifications
Tertiary qualification in environmental engineering, science,sustainability or related disciplines or equivalent experience isrequired.
