Cotton Australia

Sydney

Represent Australian cotton growers on the water policy issues that matter most to their future.

Cotton Australia is the peak national body representing cotton producers across the country. Based in Sydney, it has built a formidable reputation since 1972 as a leader in policy development and advocacy on behalf of Australian cotton growers.

About the role

Reporting to the General Manager, the Water Policy Officer is a key member of Cotton Australia’s Policy Team, playing a central role in developing and advocating the organisation’s water policy positions. The role works closely with the General Manager, the CEO and other members of the Policy Team to ensure the cotton industry’s interests are well represented across water policy, planning and regulatory processes — engaging with stakeholders including the National Farmers’ Federation Water Committee, National Irrigators Council, Queensland Farmers’ Federation Water and Energy Policy Committee, New South Wales Irrigators Council, valley-based irrigator groups and Cotton Grower Associations.

Key responsibilities

- Develop, test and advocate Cotton Australia’s water policy positions, in consultation with the General Manager, the Policy Team and cotton growers

- Represent Cotton Australia on industry and government water policy committees and working groups, including the NFF Water Committee, NIC, QFF Water and Energy Policy Committee and NSWIC

- Monitor and analyse water-related legislative,

regulatory and policy developments — such as the Murray–Darling Basin Plan and state water resource plans — and advise on implications for cotton growers

- Prepare policy briefings, submissions and correspondence on water policy matters for the Cotton Australia Board, the CEO and the General Manager

- Build and maintain solid relationships with valley-based irrigator groups and Cotton Grower Associations, ensuring grower perspectives inform Cotton Australia’s water policy positions

- Contribute to the development and delivery of Cotton Australia’s annual policy and advocacy plan as it relates to water policy

About you

- Experience in water policy, natural resource management or agricultural advocacy is highly desirable
- A sound understanding of the water policy landscape affecting the Murray–Darling Basin and other cotton-growing regions

- Tertiary qualifications in law, natural resource management, agriculture or a related discipline will be highly regarded

- Genuine empathy with Australian agriculture and farmers
