Here’s what you’ll be up to…
As a Senior Building Surveyor within our Development Services team, you'll play an important role in managing Council's fire safety and building certification responsibilities across a broad range of developments.
You will assess complex construction certificate applications, complying development certificates and occupation certificates, while conducting critical stage inspections across all classes of buildings. You will also undertake fire safety audits, investigate fire safety complaints and assist the fire safety team to resolve complex fire safety issues.
In this senior role, you'll provide specialist technical advice to customers, industry professionals and internal stakeholders, helping navigate complex certification matters and legislative requirements. You'll also contribute to the future direction of the Certification and Fire Safety Team, identify opportunities for service improvement and revenue-generating projects, and help develop procedures that support quality outcomes for our community.
Success in this role means balancing sound technical expertise with exceptional customer service, delivering timely, practical solutions, mentoring team members and ensuring Council's certification services remain compliant, innovative and customer-focused.

What are we looking for?
We're looking for an experienced and proactive Building Surveyor who:

- Building Surveyor – Restricted (Class 1 and 10 buildings) registration and working towards Building Surveyor – Unrestricted or Building Surveyor – Restricted (all classes of buildings) registration as a Building Surveyor with the NSW Building Commission.
The must-know bits
You will be required to undertake employment checks, which may include a Criminal History Check, Qualification Check, Working with Children Check, Medical Declaration and/or a Functional Test, as relevant to the position for which you have applied.
Where a Criminal History Check is required and has returned a result that indicates disclosable court outcomes, you will be required to provide a copy of the report to Penrith City Council, for review, to progress through the recruitment process.

Requirements
Essential
- A tertiary qualification in Building Surveying or a related field
- A Building Surveyor – Restricted (Class 1 and 10 buildings) (previously A3) registration and working towards a Building Surveyor – Unrestricted (previously A1) or Building Surveyor – Restricted (all classes of buildings) (previously A2) registration with the NSW Building Commission
- Demonstrated experience in the assessment and determination of a wide range of complex development and construction certificate applications
- A sound understanding of NSW Planning and Certification related legislation
- Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills
- Ability to work in a team
- Current Class C Driver’s Licence
Desirable
- Previous experience in a local government setting
- Registered as a Building Surveyor – Unrestricted or Building Surveyor – Restricted (all classes of buildings) with the NSW Building Commission
- Demonstrated time management skills and ability to lead in a high workload environment
- Experience in mentoring
- Strong IT skills
- Demonstrated experience in fire safety compliance including undertaking fire safety audits
