Shape legal reform and policy at the highest level of government.

An outstanding opportunity is available for a highly experienced legal professional to join the Legislation and Legal Policy Unit, where you will play a key role in delivering strategic legal and justice policy advice to the Northern Territory Government. Working closely with the Attorney-General, portfolio Ministers, and senior executives, you will lead reform projects that shape legislation and policy that directly impacts the community.

In this senior position, you will provide expert, timely, and high-quality legal and policy advice across a broad portfolio. Experience in criminal law is desirable. You will be actively involved in the development and coordination of legal policy, including emerging and cross-jurisdictional initiatives, while supporting the progression of legislative reform.

A significant aspect of the role involves preparing and presenting high-level written materials, including cabinet submissions, ministerial briefs, reports, and correspondence. You will be expected to communicate complex legal and policy issues clearly and persuasively, both in writing and verbally, to support informed decision-making at executive and ministerial levels.

The role also carries leadership responsibilities, including supervising and mentoring legal staff to ensure work is delivered to a high standard, within agreed timeframes, and in a professional manner. You will manage competing priorities across your own workload and that of your team, maintaining accountability for the quality and integrity of all outputs.





As a senior representative of the Department, you will engage with a range of stakeholders across government and external organisations, building strong working relationships and contributing to cooperative policy outcomes. You will also support the ongoing monitoring and review of legislation and play an important role in maintaining the legislative amendment process.

To be successful, you will be an admitted Australian lawyer, or eligible for admission, with extensive experience in legal practice relevant to this role. You will bring a demonstrated ability to manage complex legal and policy matters, supported by strong analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving skills. Your experience will include preparing advice and recommendations for senior decision-makers, as well as negotiating and communicating effectively at high levels.

You will be a strategic thinker who is highly organised and resilient, with a proven ability to manage demanding workloads and deliver outcomes under pressure. A strong sense of professionalism, political awareness, and sound judgement is essential, along with a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and accountability.

Experience with Northern Territory legislation, government processes, and legal policy development will be well regarded, as will prior experience supervising and developing junior legal staff and contributing to strategic project management initiatives.
