One full time ongoing vacancy commencing 16/09/2026 is available

The Northern Territory Government is seeking an experienced and highly capable Senior Policy Lawyer to join the Legislation and Legal Policy Unit within the Attorney-General’s portfolio. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of legislation and legal policy across criminal, civil and regulatory law, and to provide high-level advice that directly influences government decision-making.

In this role, you will provide authoritative, timely and strategic legal and policy advice to Executive leadership, Ministers and key stakeholders. You will play a central role in the development, review and implementation of legislative reforms and policy initiatives, while preparing high-quality Cabinet submissions, ministerials, briefing papers and reports. The position requires solid analytical capability to assess complex legal and policy issues, develop options and deliver clear, evidence-based recommendations for consideration at Executive and Ministerial levels.

You will also work collaboratively across government, building and maintaining effective relationships with agencies, stakeholders and clients, and representing the Department in a professional and solutions-focused manner. A key part of the role is managing competing priorities and delivering high-quality outputs within tight timeframes,

while maintaining a thorough and contemporary understanding of relevant legal frameworks, policy developments and government processes.

To be successful in this position, you must be admitted as an Australian legal practitioner and be eligible to obtain a practising certificate in the Northern Territory. You will bring substantial experience in legal practice in relevant areas, including a demonstrated ability to manage complex legal and policy matters. You will have well-developed conceptual, analytical and research skills, along with excellent written and verbal communication abilities, particularly in preparing executive-level documents.

The ideal candidate will have strong stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills and demonstrate sound judgement, political awareness and professionalism in the provision of legal policy advice. You will be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, managing competing demands and delivering outcomes under pressure, while upholding the highest standards of ethics and accountability.

Experience and understanding of the Northern Territory’s legal and government environment will be highly regarded, as will experience supporting or mentoring junior legal staff.

This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to meaningful legal and policy reform while working in a collaborative and dynamic public sector environment, with exposure to high-level decision-making and opportunities for professional growth.
