For ten years, the founder of one of Queensland's most awarded asset finance brokerages has been saying no to the same question.
His clients are self-employed. Tradies with three utes and a HiAb. Civil operators running thirty machines.
Business owners whose financials look messy on paper and make perfect sense the moment someone bothers to understand them. He's financed their trucks, their excavators, their gear. And somewhere in almost every one of those relationships, the same question comes up: "Mate, can you do my home loan?"
For ten years the answer has been no. Not because the work wasn't there. Because he refuses to do things halfway, and residential lending done properly is its own craft. So he referred it out, watched other brokers fumble clients he'd spent years earning, and hated every minute of it.
This year he stopped saying no. He's built a new residential business to sit alongside the brokerage, and he's hiring one person to run the lending. That's the role.
You'll start with something almost no first-year broker gets: a client base that already trusts the brand. The back book is expected to keep you writing for your first six to nine months before you generate a single lead of your own. These aren't cold names on a list. They're business owners who have been asking for this for years.
The work is self-employed lending done properly. Cash flow that tells a different story to the P&L.; Businesses carrying heavy equipment repayments that look unprofitable right up until you read them properly. If you've come out of business banking, or built your book on complex-income clients,
you'll recognise the terrain.
What you're walking into
- A warm-lead book expected to carry your first six to nine months of writing
- First hire into a current business, not another seat in a broker farm
- An experienced operations manager running the day to day, with offshore processing support so your time goes into clients, not the CRM
- A team built underneath this role as the business grows, and the first person in is best placed to lead it
About you
- You've written residential loans for self-employed and complex-income borrowers, or you've come out of business banking and can read a set of financials without flinching
- You can sell. You'll pick up the phone, work the list, and hold your own with anyone from a sole-trader sparky to a fleet operator
- You adjust to whoever is in front of you. No script, no corporate polish
- You're playing the long game, because the reward is built for exactly that
The package
- $100,000 base + superannuation
- Commission on what you write
- Bonuses the founder genuinely wants you earning
- A share of the trail on the book you build. Not a JV, not gifted equity. You earn your way into ownership of something that compounds
The founder built his brokerage on getting deals done and backing people to work without being micromanaged. Performance gets rewarded. Flexibility comes once the numbers are consistent, and he's upfront about that too.
If you've been waiting for the role where the leads are real, the trail is genuinely yours to share in, and the ceiling is set by what you build rather than what you're given, let's talk.
