Primary objective
Provide a 24-hour Medical Ultrasound Service to the clients of the Alice Springs Hospital the Central Area Services Network,
Community Health Centres and Private Practitioners as requested.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide Medical Ultrasound services based at Alice Springs Hospital as required to assist with the diagnosis and

therefore treatment of the patient.



Shift and “on call” hours will be required.
2. In co-operation with the Director of Medical Imaging provide a supervisory function to trainee Sonographers ensuring

adherence to standard work practices.
3. Contribute to clinical activity through the provision of advice and Sonographer’s work sheets as it relates to elements of

work.
4. Ensure cleanliness and maintenance of Ultrasound equipment.
5. Recognise the hospitals ongoing commitment to Quality Assurance through personal accountability for standards of

care
6. Liaise with Chief Radiographers/Sonographer, appropriate hospital staff, medical officers or the radiologist to clarify

request details or to ascertain relevant clinical history to ensure the most appropriate Ultrasound examination is
performed.

7. Perform patient registration functions for the purpose of Ultrasound examinations and ensure all details are entered
correctly both on the request forms and the computer system on completion of the examination.

8. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being
undertaken in order to ensure high quality, protected services and workplaces.

Selection criteria
Essential
1.



Possession of a recognised Allied Health degree and a Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound, Diploma of Medical

Ultrasonography, or equivalent recognised ultrasound qualification, with eligibility for accreditation through the
Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry (ASAR).

2. Demonstrated capability to perform General, Obstetrics/Gynaecology, small parts, complex Vascular and
musculoskeletal ultrasound examinations.

3. Proven ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, mentor staff and maintain strict confidentiality.
4. Awareness of the importance of Infection Control principles and an understanding of hygiene practices within a hospital

environment.
5. Able to maintain professional qualifications by taking part in ongoing Continuing Professional Development as defined

by the Australian Sonographer’s Accreditation Registry.
6. Demonstrated ability to communicate with patients and staff from a diverse range of cultural and social backgrounds.
7. Familiarity with a Radiology Information System (RIS)/Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS).
Desirable
1. Capable of performing Paediatric ultrasound examinations.
