About the Role
As a Graduate Structures Engineer at Queensland Rail, you’ll play a key role in delivering high‑quality, practical engineering solutions across our regional rail network. You’ll gain exposure to a wide range of projects and disciplines, contributing to initiatives that directly impact communities and industries throughout Queensland. Through our structured Graduate Engineer Rotation Program, you’ll build your technical expertise, business acumen, and leadership potential, setting you up for long‑term success in the rail industry. This position reports into the Lead Structural Engineer and is permanently based in Townsville.
What You’ll Do
- Take part in the Graduate Engineer Rotation Program, gaining broad experience and understanding across different engineering and business functions, commencing in February 2027
- Support both operational and capital planning, contributing to effective and commercially viable engineering solutions.
- Assist in the development of strategies for managing structural assets within our Regional business unit.
- Build strong relationships and represent Queensland Rail professionally by applying high‑level communication, interpersonal, and decision‑making skills.
- Identify opportunities for innovation, process improvement, and emerging technologies to enhance our commercial performance.
- Work collaboratively with engineering teams to deliver practical and cost‑effective solutions.
- Ensure all work complies with relevant safety, quality, and environmental standards, including legislation and regulations.
- Work towards becoming a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ).
Additional Requirements
- Adhere to Queensland Rail’s Code of Conduct and uphold all legal and safety responsibilities.
- Travel interstate or intrastate, as required by project need, on a fortnightly basis.
- Collaborate with mentors, managers, and fellow graduates to grow your capabilities.
- Participate in ongoing learning and development initiatives.
- Take on additional projects or assignments as directed by your Hiring Manager or the Graduate and Learning Exchange Manager.
Key Selection Criteria
- Robust project management skills, including the ability to gather, analyse, and integrate complex information.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, both written and verbal.
- Solid analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making capabilities.
- The ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced, team‑oriented environment.
- A strong alignment with Queensland Rail’s Values and Behaviours.
- To be eligible, you must have completed or be on track to complete a Bachelor of Civil Engineering.

- Proactive and eager to learn, with a genuine interest in infrastructure and transport.
- Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.
- Confident in analysing data, solving problems, and making informed decisions.
- Clear and professional communicators, both written and verbal.

Salary for this role is $86,148 base salary, excluding Superannuation/Penalties.
