Primary objective
Contribute to the delivery of a culturally appropriate health care service and the continuity of care of Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander patients and their family members by providing a liaison service within the Gove District Hospital.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide culturally appropriate assistance,
support, and quality care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by
providing a liaison service to assist patients and families during their hospitalisation.
2. Work closely with the multi-disciplinary team (Doctors, Nurses, Social Workers, Allied Health) and networking with
government and non-government agencies as required.
3. Ensure accurate documentation in consumer file notes and maintain record keeping at a high level.
4. Contribute to the Social and Emotional Wellbeing unit by taking part in relevant meetings, business planning, quality
improvement activities and promoting the service to other staff.
5. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being
undertaken in order to ensure high quality, secure services and workplaces.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Ability to speak and understand at least one Aboriginal language of East Arnhem Land.
2. Proven ability to engage and interact effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and health professionals
from diverse cultures.
3.
Proven knowledge and awareness of cultural and cross-cultural issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
people in today’s society in health and wellbeing.
4. Demonstrated high level of communication skills relating to liaising and advocating effectively with and on behalf of
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers and their families in a culturally appropriate manner.
5. A demonstrated high standard of oral and written communication skills and experience in using Microsoft computer
programs and accessing databases.
6. The ability to work with the multi-disciplinary team and to work as an effective team member.
7. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, determining priorities, meeting deadlines,
organising daily workloads, planning, organising and participating in staff education sessions and programmes.
