The Role

The duties of an APS 6 Senior Investigator include:

- Provide detailed fraud investigation technical, skilled and policy advice in relation to complex work and contribute to strategic planning, program and project management and policy development.
- Plan and support the business objectives of routine investigations relating to fraud and corruption related offences.
- Interpret and apply relevant legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks to investigation activities.
- Employ a range of evidence gathering techniques, including, interviewing witnesses, taking witness statements and preparing affidavits.
- Develop and deliver high quality reporting products into allegations of wrongdoing and contribute to the preparation and compilation of criminal briefs.
- Work collaboratively with team members and actively participate in teamwork and group activities.
- Maintain accurate recordkeeping across all applicable Defence systems.
- Build and maintain productive working relationships within Defence and engage cooperatively with law enforcement agencies.

The duties of an APS 6 Investigator within Assessments include:

- Perform and accurately complete Assessments into allegations of serious misconduct and fraud related offences, in accordance with relevant legislation, policies and procedure.
- Develop and deliver high quality Assessment Reports into allegations of serious misconduct and fraud related offences.
- Provide advice and guidance to groups and services on the outcomes of Assessments.
- Build and sustain working relationships with other Defence Investigators and stakeholders in the conduct of their duties.
- Work collaboratively with team members and actively participate in teamwork and group activities.
- Monitor and triage incoming complaints as well as respond to complainants in a timely manner.
- Assess incoming complaints of fraud or misconduct, using sound judgement, to categorise the jurisdiction, complexity and seriousness of allegations.
- Interpret and apply legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks, to assessments activities.




- Assess and monitor Assessment procedures, in order to maintain currency with emerging processes and techniques.
- Supervise and contribute to the professional development of APS5 members within the Assessments Team
- Maintain accurate record keeping across all applicable Defence systems.

About our Team

The Directorate of Investigations in the Fraud Investigations and Public Interest Disclosure Branch delivers Defence’s fraud investigations capability. The Directorate works closely with other Defence Investigative Authorities to support the organisation’s response to integrity risks. Our core responsibility is conducting assessments, investigations and reviews into matters involving allegations of serious or complex fraud and/or corruption, occurring within or against Defence.

Fraud investigations are a critical element of Defence’s system of control for preventing, detecting and dealing with fraud, enabling Defence’s compliance with the Commonwealth Fraud and Corruption Control Framework 2024 and Fraud and Corruption Rule 2024. Through effective and timely responses to alleged fraud and corruption including triaging, complex assessments and investigations, resulting in successful prosecution of fraud and corruption offences, the Directorate has key role in preventing and dealing with fraud in Defence.

The work of the Directorate contributes to mitigating risk of fraud against Defence and the Commonwealth more broadly, which is critical to ensuring funds are available for their intended purpose and maintaining public confidence in the Government.

- Experience and/or qualifications in complex assessments/investigations/intelligence or similar.
- An understanding of fraud and corruption.

- Ability to work effectively within a framework of legislation, policy and procedures to maintain the trust and confidence of Defence senior leadership and the Australian Government.
- Represent senior leadership to provide quality, trusted and timely advice through delivering an investigative response function in support of enabling Defence capability.
- A motivated team player committed to building overall team and individual capability and driving continuous improvement.
- Have a willingness to undertake travel as required (investigations only).

Eligibility

Security Clearance:

Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at “Negative Vetting Level 1”.
