The Auburn Emergency Department sees approximately 33,000 adult and paediatric presentations per year with a wide-ranging and engaging case mix. Paediatrics makes up 20 -25% of the presentations. Overall admission rate is 30%.
The department has an Adult and Paediatric short stay unit and is an accredited ACEM TS4 site. It also offers accreditations for the Paediatric logbook requirement of ACEM training. A consultant is on call at all times and FACEM support is available 16 hours per day, Monday to Sunday.
The department collaborates closely with other inpatient speciality units and provides on‑site diagnostic services including Plain radiology, CT and Ultrasound. It is a 155‑bed acute care facility with a 10‑bed Close Observation Unit and is approximately 11 km from Westmead Hospital.
What you'll be doing
The Unaccredited Trainee works as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes medical, nursing and allied health professionals. The trainee will be directly responsible to the supervising Emergency Medicine Specialist of the day and ultimately to the Term Supervisor and the Emergency Department Director. The role involves working effectively with other specialty teams, nursing staff and external clinicians such as GPs and community nurses to ensure optimal patient care.
Auburn Emergency Department is part of Training Network 5, which includes Children’s Hospital Westmead ED, Blacktown Mount Druitt Hospital ED, Nepean ED, Westmead ED, Orange Hospital ED & Tweeds Hospital ED.
Qualifications
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia
- Must have completed at least two postgraduate years of training in an Australian Public Hospital or equivalent (not as an Observer)
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in a supervised environment with a commitment to self‑education and continuous professional development
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team with an understanding of the roles of the doctor and other members of the healthcare team
- Ability and willingness to work at the facilities within the Network to deliver patient care and to participate in a 24‑hour shift work roster
- Ability to recognise the acutely unwell patient and to initiate immediate management and institute Basic Life Support. Completion of ALS training, or willingness to complete in the first 3 months of appointment
- Excellent organisational and time‑management skills and ability to manage competing priorities

The department offers a teaching program closely linked to Westmead Emergency, with multiple streams dedicated to different requirements including weekly trainee teaching and skills days throughout the year to prepare for both the primary and fellowship exams.
