The Chance
An opportunity exists for an experienced and commercially focused Debt Recovery & Collections Lawyer to join a fast-paced legal and recoveries environment.
This role is suited to a lawyer with strong experience in debt recovery litigation, creditor enforcement, and end-to-end collections management, alongside a sound understanding of the regulatory and professional obligations applying to law practices in New South Wales.
You will take ownership of a high-volume portfolio of recovery matters, managing files from initial instruction through to enforcement and resolution, while ensuring compliance with all applicable legal, procedural and professional conduct requirements.
This is a hands-on, autonomous role offering genuine responsibility, client-facing work and long-term career development within a commercially driven environment.
About the Role
You will be responsible for managing a diverse portfolio of debt recovery and enforcement matters, including:
- Commercial and consumer debt recovery matters
- Pre-litigation demand and collections processes
- Drafting and issuing letters of demand
- Commencing and managing proceedings in the Local Court and District Court of NSW
- Default judgment applications and undefended recovery processes
- Enforcement action including garnishee orders, examination notices and writs for levy of property
- Bankruptcy and insolvency-related recovery processes
- Negotiating settlements and structured repayment arrangements
- Managing defended recovery proceedings and settlement conferences
- Liaising with external solicitors, barristers, enforcement agents and third parties
- Advising on recovery prospects, enforcement strategy and commercial risk
A key component of the role will also involve ensuring compliance with regulatory and professional obligations applicable to legal practices in NSW, including:
- Compliance with the Legal Profession Uniform Law (NSW) and associated regulations
- Ensuring appropriate client costs disclosure obligations are met at all stages of engagement
- Supporting compliance with legal billing practices and engagement documentation requirements
- Assisting with internal audit, file review and risk management processes
- Maintaining high standards of professional conduct and ethical compliance in all client interactions
About You
To succeed in this role, you will ideally demonstrate:
- Minimum 3+ years’ post-admission experience in debt recovery, litigation or commercial disputes
- Strong working knowledge of NSW debt recovery procedures and court processes
- Experience independently managing recovery matters from instruction through to enforcement
- Solid understanding of enforcement mechanisms available under NSW civil procedure
- Working knowledge of the Legal Profession Uniform Law (NSW), particularly costs disclosure and client engagement obligations
- Strong drafting skills, including letters of demand, pleadings,
affidavits and settlement documentation
- Excellent negotiation and dispute resolution skills
- Commercial mindset with a focus on efficient and practical recovery outcomes
- Ability to manage high-volume files while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
- Strong organisational and time management skills
- Confident communication with clients, debtors, external stakeholders and internal teams
- Ability to work autonomously and take ownership of outcomes
- Professional judgment, initiative and strong ethical awareness
Highly Regarded:
- Experience in insolvency, bankruptcy or enforcement litigation
- Prior collections and/or debt recovery experience
- Familiarity with legal practice management or collections software systems
- Understanding of trust accounting and legal billing processes
- Experience mentoring junior staff or supporting team operations
- Exposure to large-scale debt recovery portfolios or institutional clients
