The Opportunity
We are seeking a Policy and Government Relations Advisor to support its Impact and Engagement team through policy analysis and by fostering strong relationships with government and key stakeholders across Australia.
This opportunity will work closely with our Institute’s researchers and senior leaders to advance policy initiatives focused on improving health outcomes for communities facing inequity.
This role will involve a collaborative approach with colleagues in the UK and India as part of the global Impact and Engagement team contributing to cross-regional projects and aligning work in Australia and Pacific with broader international initiatives.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Conduct background research on relevant health policy issues and analyse policy development to identify impacts on the Institute.
- Prepare high-quality briefs, reports, submissions and presentations for team members and management staff.
- Support our government relations activities including engaging with Ministers’ and MPs’ offices, arranging meetings, tracking engagement and supporting planning.
- Support broader engagement with government officials, civil society, and other key stakeholders, including through supporting the planning of events and other advocacy activities.
- Track relevant submissions and parliamentary inquiries, relevant government announcements, and opportunities for public advocacy.
- Provide support to team members in delivering projects including background research and maintaining efficient systems for government engagement and advocacy; provide support to research teams in delivering their impact goals.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
- Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong policy engagement and influencing skills.
- Robust interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to build and maintain strong, effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to work within tight deadlines and manage projects independently, prioritising and managing workflow and ensuring high-quality outputs.
- Ability to travel in Australia and internationally if/when appropriate.
- Ability to demonstrate a commitment to The George Institute’s values and model these in all aspects of your work.
- At least 3-5 years’ experience of advocacy, policy influencing and strategy development in the global health or related sectors.
- Tertiary qualification(s) in social sciences, economics, health sciences, law, communications or related discipline.
- Experience of high-level stakeholder engagement across multiple sectors.
- Experience of building and sustaining strong, mutually beneficial partnerships to achieve impactful outcomes.
