Are you an experienced procurement professional looking to make a meaningful impact in medical research? The Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute (ONJCRI) is looking for a skilled Procurement Officer to lead and strengthen the Institute’s purchasing and procurement functions, embed sustainable procurement practices, and support our long‑term operational and financial sustainability.
About the Role
As the Procurement Officer, you will be responsible for delivering ethical, efficient and strategically aligned procurement that directly supports laboratory operations and scientific research. You will lead purchasing, oversee supplier and inventory management, and ensure compliance with financial, and modern slavery obligations.
You will work closely with researchers, operations teams, Finance, and the Purchasing & Stores Officer to ensure a seamless, high‑performing procurement setting.

Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Procurement: Develop and Implement Procurement Strategies that align purchasing activities with ONJCRI’s operational, financial and sustainability goals.
- Lead End‑to‑End Procurement Operations: Oversee purchasing of laboratory consumables, equipment and services to ensure timely, accurate and cost‑effective procurement.
- Optimise Supplier Management & Relationships: Build and manage strong supplier partnerships, negotiating quality, reliability and value while monitoring ongoing performance.
- Strengthen Stock, Stores & Inventory Oversight: Provide oversight to the Purchasing & Stores Officer to ensure efficient stores operations, accurate stock levels, goods receipting and inventory integrity.
- Enhance Systems, Governance & Reporting: Optimise procurement workflows in Business Central while ensuring compliance with policies, financial controls, ESG obligations and modern slavery requirements.
- Manage Procurement & Supply Chain Risk: Identify and mitigate supply chain, vendor and inventory risks, ensuring continuity of critical laboratory supplies.
- Build Capability Across the Institute: Train and support researchers and staff in procurement processes, systems and best‑practice purchasing to lift capability across ONJCRI.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Tertiary qualifications in Procurement, Supply Chain, Business, Sustainability, Environmental Management or a related field.
- Experience in procurement within scientific, healthcare or complex operational environments.
- Solid understanding of procurement best practice, ethical and sustainable sourcing, and lifecycle cost considerations.
- Ability to identify and manage ESG, sustainability and modern slavery risks.
- Strong negotiation, supplier management and contract administration abilities.
- Experience guiding or supervising procurement or inventory staff.
- Confidence using procurement systems (Business Central preferred).
- Analytical capability, data literacy and strong reporting skills.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
