Responsibilities
The Chef is responsible for planning, overseeing, and executing the preparation, cooking,
and presentation of meals in dining and catering establishments. This includes developing
menus, estimating food and labour costs, ordering supplies, and ensuring food quality at all
stages of preparation. The role also involves maintaining hygiene and safety standards,
supervising kitchen staff, and coordinating kitchen operations to ensure an efficient workflow
and high-quality service. By managing kitchen operations effectively, the Chef contributes to
the overall success and reputation of the establishment.
Key Duties
1. Menu Planning & Food Costing
● Plan menus in consultation with management, ensuring variety, balance, and
cost-effectiveness.
● Estimate food and labour costs to maintain profitability while ensuring high-quality
meals.
● Order food supplies based on menu planning and inventory levels.
2. Food Preparation, Cooking & Quality Control
● Monitor the quality of dishes at all stages of preparation and presentation.
● Study recipes and gather necessary ingredients before meal preparation.
● Cook food in a timely manner while ensuring consistency in taste, texture, and
presentation.
● Supervise plating and presentation to maintain high visual and quality standards.
● Freezing,
preserving, and storing food as required to maintain freshness and
minimise waste.
3. Coordination & Collaboration
● Discuss food preparation issues with Managers, Dietitians, and kitchen and waiting
staff.
● Inform waitstaff about daily specials, menu changes, and special dietary options.
● Work closely with kitchen and front-of-house staff to ensure smooth service,
especially during peak hours.
4. Staff Training & Supervision
● Hire, train, and supervise cooks and other food preparation workers to ensure
efficiency.
● Demonstrate techniques and advise on cooking procedures to maintain consistency.
● Delegate tasks to kitchen staff and oversee performance to uphold operational
standards.
5. Health, Safety & Hygiene Compliance
● Explain and enforce hygiene and food safety regulations in compliance with
Australian health standards.
● Maintain high standards of cleanliness in food preparation areas.
● Conduct regular checks to ensure kitchen equipment is functioning properly.
Job Type: Full time
Pay: $76,515.00 – $80,000.00 per year
