About The Job: School counsellors provide counselling and psychological assessment to support teachers and improve student learning and wellbeing outcomes. This role offers professional development opportunities and the chance to make a positive impact on children and young people.
The successful candidate will be based at Gordon West Public School and may work across the lifespan with primary and high school students, engaging with diverse school communities and collaborating with multiple stakeholders inside and outside the school system.
School counsellors receive regular professional supervision, participate in group and peer supervision, and work as part of a multidisciplinary team. The Department supports continuing professional development and registration with the Psychology Board of Australia, along with benefits such as holiday leave, travel allowances, health and wellbeing programs, and indemnity insurance for psychologists.
Gordon West Public School is a metropolitan school on Sydney’s North Shore in the Macquarie Park region, with 423 students (Kindergarten to Year 6) and 65% of students from a language background other than English. The school emphasises a culture of high expectations and personal best, and provides a broad curriculum with a strong Creative Arts program and Student leadership and wellbeing initiatives.

Specific Selection Criteria
- Experience in counselling using evidence-based interventions with an understanding of the mental health needs of children and young people.
- Experience in psychological assessment of children and young people, including case formulation and report writing.
- Ability to collaborate with key stakeholders to improve learning and wellbeing outcomes for diverse student populations.
Conditions
- Be a registered or provisionally registered psychologist, or eligible for registration with the Psychology Board of Australia.
- Ability and willingness to travel between worksites.
- This position is under the Teachers award (Crown Employees (Teachers in Schools and Related Employees) Salaries and Conditions Award 2024). To be eligible to apply, you must have unconditional, full approval to teach or be eligible to apply for approval to teach; if you do not hold full approval to teach with NSW Department of Education, you should commence the application process when applying for this chance.
