About the facility
Major sites include University Hospital Geelong in Geelong's CBD, the McKellar Centre precinct in North Geelong, Barwon Health North in Norlane, and residential aged care facilities spanning the region. Comprehensive mental health, community health and dental services are delivered through programs across the Barwon South West Region, including Torquay and Colac.
Barwon Health provides pregnancy, intrapartum and postnatal care for both high and low risk pregnancies. The number of births per annum is around ****. Antenatal care is provided in hospital and community sites. We have a Maternity Assessment Unit adjacent to the Birth Unit. The Birth Unit has 8 birth rooms, and the Maternity Ward has 24 beds, a Postnatal Care in the home service and a Lactation service.
Role responsibilities
- In this rewarding role, you will plan, implement, evaluate, and maintain a high standard of midwifery care to achieve optimal clinical outcomes within your professional scope of practice. You will deliver compassionate, respectful care that acknowledges and honors the dignity, culture, and values of every patient and their family. You will empower women and their families working within a service model that embraces continuity of philosophy and consistency of advice; you will provide direct, women-centred care that reflects best practices and professional standards.
Work areas
- In this role you can decide where to work across the scope of midwifery practice, including Birthing Suite, Antenatal and Postnatal care on the ward, Postnatal Care in the home (PCH), Maternity Assessment Unit (MAU), Antenatal clinics, and the Permanent Acute Midwifery Pool. There is also the option to work in Special Care Nursery.

Increase autonomy with your work as a midwife at University Hospital Geelong (UHG), ability to increase clinical skills in performing ARMs, attaching FSE, performing speculums, inserting cervidil and CRB, IV cannulation and perineal suturing; these contribute to continuity of care for women within the service
Water birth competency is available as we offer water immersion and water birth at UHG
Five days a week of clinical support, education and training to keep you up to date
Preceptoring or mentoring opportunities with a clinical assessor's course and rostering support to work with other midwives
Ability to apply for Clinical Midwifery Specialist qualification, once eligible and meeting requirements
Barwon Health supports further education with paid time for work-related study
Ability to work across your scope of practice
Paid education/training for FSEP and PROMPT
Flexible rostering
Barwon Health is a training hospital for Medical and Midwifery staff, maintaining a high standard of care
All care is based on evidence-based guidelines
Barwon Health offers a Midwifery Group Practice and is working towards a Home Birth Model of care
