Manager – Community & Sustainability - Expat
Opportunity knocks for an experienced Sustainability Manager to work on a landmark APAC "mega project" at the greenfield stage. This role offers a unique chance to be involved prior to production and to own all aspects of Sustainability, particularly Social and Community Engagement. The position is worked on an expat FIFO basis from any global point of hire.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Build and maintain robust relationships with key community stakeholders.
- Ensure that identified social impacts and risks are managed and mitigation actions implemented.
- Implement the Stakeholder Management Plan, ensuring inclusive, transparent, and ongoing engagement with affected communities.
- Implement and manage the Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM).
- Lead the execution of the Community Development Plan.
- Oversee and provide direction and governance to the CDC processes.
- Oversee programs in education, healthcare, livelihood development, infrastructure support, and skills training in collaboration with local communities and NGOs.
- Conduct socio-economic surveys and work with communities on needs assessments to inform community investment priorities.
- Ensure community development activities are inclusive, gender-sensitive, and culturally appropriate.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness and impact of community development programs, reporting outcomes to senior management and stakeholders.
- Develop and implement the Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) compliant IFC Performance Standard 3.
- Ensure environmental compliance with provincial environmental regulations and the Project environment permit.
- Oversee environmental monitoring programs for aspects including air quality, noise, waste, biodiversity, and land use.
- Manage internal and external environmental reporting obligations.
- Lead risk assessments and emergency response planning for environmental incidents.
- Supervise contractor environmental performance and conduct routine audits and inspections.
- Manage and report on performance within the department or area of responsibility; set appropriate performance objectives for direct reports and hold them accountable for achieving these; take appropriate corrective action where necessary to ensure the achievement of annual business objectives.
- Set KPIs, and provide relevant reports daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly (as required).
- Actively contribute to the region’s "Journey to Zero".

- Collaborate with regional team members, colleagues and peers.
- Accountable for ensuring succession planning activities are proactively managed, with development plans in place for individuals to assume critical positions within the team.
- Undertake and deliver projects and ad hoc work/assignments as required by the business.
Essential Personal Attributes & Qualities
- Education
- Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Social Development, Natural Resource Management, or a related discipline.
- Experience
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in environmental and social performance in large-scale infrastructure or extractives (mining, oil & gas, energy).
- Proven experience in community development planning and implementation in remote or rural settings.
- Familiarity with complex regulatory settings and international standards such as the IFC Performance Standards.
- Experience working with complex tribal communities.
