Join a fast-growing WA electrical OEM specialising in high-performance switchboards, substations, and underground mining technologies.

SMEC Power & Technology is expanding and we are seeking a capable and motivated Electrical Engineer to join our Perth-based engineering and manufacturing team.

This is a hands-on, technically diverse role suited to an engineer who wants to work across design, drafting, estimating, manufacturing, and project delivery, with direct involvement in 1000V, 415V and High Voltage switchboards, RMUs, substations and starter panels.

ABOUT THE ROLE

You will perform detailed design and technical engineering work on switchboards, substations, and mining electrical systems, including:

Core Responsibilities

Electrical Design & Drafting

- Produce GA drawings, single lines, schematics and wiring diagrams

- Develop cable schedules, cable sizing calculations, routing, earthing designs

- Ensure all designs align with AS/NZS standards, mining regulations, and client specifications

- Interpret complex specifications and incorporate technical standards into project designs

- Draft using AutoDesk tools

- Power system modelling (load flow, protection coordination, arc flash analysis)

- PLC design and programming

Switchboard & HV/LV Engineering

- Design for 1000V, 415V and HV switchboards, RMUs, substations and starter panels

- Contribute to protection scheme development & equipment selection

- Assist in the preparation and review of HV submissions (desirable)

Estimating,



BOMs & Manufacturing Support

- Prepare bills of materials, cost estimates, and quotes

- Translate designs into manufacturing-ready documentation

- Collaborate with fabrication, panel building, assembly, and testing teams

- Optimise material usage and support standardisation across product lines

Project Delivery & Technical Support

- Engage with project managers and clients to clarify technical requirements

- Provide engineering input to resolve design queries, variations, and deviations

- Participate in peer reviews to ensure quality and compliance

- Support FAT, QA checks, and site-based commissioning activities when required

Continuous Improvement & Engineering Development

- Drive efficiencies through design automation tools, CAD scripts, templates and spreadsheets

- Contribute to the evolution of SMEC’s engineering standards and design libraries

- Identify technical risks and work proactively with the broader project team

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and eligibility for MIEAust

- 3–5 years’ experience in mining, industrial, OEM or switchboard environments

- Strong CAD drafting skills (AutoDesk products preferred)

- Experience with LV/HV switchboard design

- Excellent technical writing, communication and organisational skills

- Solid attention to detail and ability to interpret complex specifications

- WA Driver’s Licence

- Ability to pass medical and D&A; requirements
