Primary objective
To be part of the Neurosurgical team providing a timely and high quality neurosurgical service to the population of 250,000
and visitors to the Top End.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Assess neurosurgical patients referred from the Emergency Department and undertake consults for inpatients.
2. Admit,



manage and discharge patients from the service under the supervision of neurosurgical consultants with the aim of

providing the highest possible standards of care.
3. Participate in operations under supervision of neurosurgeons at the supervision level determined by AHPRA.
4. Provide telephone advice to community clinics, GPs and peripheral hospitals.
5. Participate in the 24 hour roster for the Neurosurgical Department as required to ensure the proper functioning of the

service.
6. Provide supervision to junior medical staff and other clinical staff, including those in other Divisions as appropriate.
7. Provide medico-legal and other reports under supervision as appropriate.
8. Participate in research, educational and professional development.
9. Initiate and participate in quality assurance activities, peer review practices and continuing Medical Education.
10. Participate in other activities as directed by the Head of Neurosurgery.
11. Assist outreach services as directed.
12. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being

undertaken in order to ensure high quality, protected services and workplaces.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia
2. Hold a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or its equivalent.
3. Have appropriate training and experience applicable to Neurosurgery.
4. Demonstrated commitment to high quality patient care.
5. Demonstrated capability and interest in research.
6. Demonstrated ability to communicate at all levels.
7. Demonstrated surgical competency.
8. Demonstrated teamwork and collaboration.
9. Passion for rural, regional and Aboriginal healthcare.
10. An enthusiasm to develop cultural competency.
