Primary objective
A Senior Applications Officer manages complex applications for financial assistance from victims of violent crime across the Northern
Territory to optimise outcomes for applicants in accordance with relevant legislation.
Context statement
The position is one in a team of Applications Officers that processes applications for financial assistance from victims of violent crime. A
Senior Applications Officer works directly with victims or their representatives to undertake enquiries and to obtain information
considered necessary to present the victim’s application for assessment, including the drafting of assessment notices for consideration by
an assessor. A Senior Applications Officer works within a legislative framework and consults with a range of legal, medical, law
enforcement, court, correctional and social service organisations and agencies.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide appropriate and confidential advice and support to victims of violent crime in relation to their entitlements for assistance
under the legislation.
2. Manage complex and sensitive cases, by overseeing the gathering of information and arrangement of medico-legal assessments, and
by investigating a variety of records from police, medical providers, employers and other services.
3. Provide guidance, mentoring and direction to other Crime Victims Services Unit (CVSU) officers, as required.
4. Evaluate information and prepare draft written recommendations and supporting documentation to enable Assessors and the Director
to make decisions on applications.
5. Contribute to the development, implementation and maintenance of the Unit’s policies, procedures, forms, templates, systems and
practices.
6. Work with other divisions of the Attorney-General’s Department and with external organisations for the purpose of ensuring effective
implementation of relevant legislation.
Selection criteria
Essential
1.
Demonstrated ability in the interpretation and application of complex legislation.
2. Demonstrated well-developed ability in client or case management, preferably in the legal or social services sector.
3. Highly effective oral and written communication skills to interact with a wide range of victims of violent crime and other stakeholders,
including support groups, service providers and other Government agencies.
4. Well-developed ability to plan, program and coordinate high workloads with changing priorities, with high level problem-solving skills
and ability to use initiative.
5. Well-developed ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
6. Well-developed cross-cultural awareness and the ability to relate appropriately to people from a wide range of socio-economic
backgrounds.
7. Experience in dealing with people who may be traumatised, vulnerable or exhibit challenging behaviours.
8. Demonstrated ability in administration, complex file management and/or financial administration, together with the use of associated
computer programs, or the demonstrated ability to acquire such knowledge quickly.
Desirable
1. Tertiary qualification in public or social policy, community development, law or other relevant discipline.
2. Knowledge of the issues and challenges in providing assistance to victims of violent crime, together with the associated legislation and
policy frameworks.
