Proudly providing the communities of Western Victoria with opportunities to participate in indoor sports for over 45 years, Basketball Ballarat has grown and developed over this time into the organisation it is today.
In 2025, we boast a diverse and growing business which operates competitions and events across a range of sports for people of all ages, a successful hospitality business, a range of community programs and elite teams participating in national competitions that attract athletes from around the world. These current programs see 6,000 users interact with Basketball Ballarat each week.
Basketball Ballarat operates from a state‑of‑the‑art modern 8‑court indoor sports precinct, which includes a café, bistro, sports lounge, commercial gym, consulting suites and three outdoor 3‑on‑3 basketball courts. The organisation also jointly operates a modern four‑court facility at Phoenix College, retains private ownership of an additional four‑court venue incorporating a licensed club and bistro and is involved in the management of a range of events and competitions at external locations.

The Role
Reporting to a Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) provides operational leadership and management for Basketball Ballarat. The role focuses on expanding programs and services, enhancing member and partner experiences, and nurturing our excellent ongoing relationships with government, commercial partners, clubs, and community groups.
The CEO is responsible for sound financial management, including budgets, forecasting, reporting and risk oversight, ensuring the organisation remains sustainable and accountable. Working with the Board, the CEO ensures compliance with all governance and regulatory obligations, including, for example, Fair Work, Child Safe Standards, Work Health & Safety and Liquor & Gaming legislation.
Partnering with the internal leadership team the CEO oversees facilities, events, elite teams, competitions, partnerships, sponsorships and administration, ensuring efficient operations and alignment with strategic goals. As the public face of Basketball Ballarat, the CEO represents the organisation at key events, negotiates agreements and promotes positive community engagement.
Through strong leadership of staff and volunteers, the CEO fosters a positive and high‑performing culture, ensuring Basketball Ballarat continues to thrive as a respected and sustainable sporting organisation.
As CEO, you will partner with the Board of Management and other senior leaders driving strategic decisions to optimise financial and operational performance of the business to ensure the ongoing financial health and sustainability of the organisation.
Responsibilities
- Manage and oversee the financial functions of Basketball Ballarat including accurate budgeting, forecasting and regular reporting requirements.
- Ensure the provision of timely financial, operational, risk and governance reporting to the Board.
- Lead and manage Human Resources for the organisation to ensure adherence to internal policy,
Fair Work, Child Safe and Work Health & Safety legislative requirements.
- Implement and maintain robust financial, governance and broader programme area policy, procedure and practice(s) to ensure Basketball Ballarat meets all strategic, legislative and regulatory requirements.
- Develop and mentor the management team to ensure a high level of performance and standards of professional practice.
- Lead and attend a range of Basketball Ballarat events and nurture and manage stakeholder relations, partnerships and agreements.
Skills & Experience
- Appropriate qualification in Business, Commerce, Accounting or equivalent.
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills with creative, independent, strategic thinking to guide long‑term success of the organisation.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills that include the ability to lead, inspire and motivate others.
- Demonstrated ability to balance financial operational requirements, strategic business goals and needs of employees, volunteers, partners and community members.
- Experience understanding what is required to successfully manage a business that relies heavily on a large team of highly valued and passionate volunteers.
- Operational experience within the sporting industry may be advantageous.
Additional Requirements
The successful applicant must have unlimited Australian working rights, satisfactorily pass a Police check, hold a current Working with Children Check and may need to complete a pre‑employment medical, psychometric and aptitude testing prior to commencement.
