About the role
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a key member of the leadership team, responsible for overseeing all financial operations and ensuring strong financial governance. This is a hands‑on role, ideal for a finance professional who is equally comfortable managing day‑to‑day accounting tasks as they are providing strategic insights to guide the organisation’s future. The CFO will work closely with the Finance, Audit & Risk Committee and Board to ensure Women in Media remains financially sustainable, compliant, and well‑positioned to grow its programs and national footprint. This role will also be the nominated Company Secretary duties, supporting the Board and ensuring adherence to legal and regulatory requirements relevant to a not‑for‑profit company in Australia.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage all accounting functions, including payroll, accounts payable/receivable, and reconciliations.
- Prepare monthly and quarterly management reports and financial statements for Management and the Board.
- Develop and monitor budgets, forecasts, and cash flow.
- Maintain accurate and timely financial records in accounting systems (e.g. Xero).
- Oversee grant budgets, reporting, and acquittals.
Governance & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and regulatory requirements (ACNC, ATO, ASIC, FBT, GST, Superannuation).
- Review year‑end financial statements and coordinate annual external audit processes.
- Develop, maintain and enhance internal financial policies, controls, and procedures.
- Provide advice and support to the Board Finance, Audit, and Risk Committee.
- Deliver proactive and effective secretarial support to the Board and its FARC including:
- Assisting with scheduling, preparation, and timely distribution of Board and committee meeting agendas and papers
- Meeting attendance, minutes, and resolutions
- Management of the Annual General Meeting (AGM), including drafting resolutions and briefing materials
- Supporting Board member induction, including preparation of induction materials and orientation sessions
- Assisting the Nominations Committee with Board recruitment processes and maintaining confidential records
- Maintain confidentiality, integrity, and best practice in all company secretarial functions
Strategic & Operational Support
- Support the Board and Management in financial planning, strategy, and risk management.
- Provide financial modelling and insights to support funding applications, sponsorships, and donor engagement.
- Advise on long‑term financial sustainability, diversification of income streams, and efficient resource allocation.
- Build an effective and efficient finance function.
- Supervise or mentor finance/admin staff.
- Work collaboratively with Management to manage budgets and ensure robust financial discipline across all activities.
- Build financial literacy and awareness across the organisation.
