THE ROLE:
This is an exciting time to be working on the visitor economy and tourism policy for the Australian Government. The tourism industry directly employs more than 713,000 people (as of December 2024), with 1 in 7 businesses in Australia (360,202 businesses) related to tourism.
The visitor economy covers:
- domestic and international tourism
- international student, business, employment-related and leisure travellers
- visiting friends and relatives
- associated industries such as hospitality, aviation, attractions, travel agents and tour operators, transport, retail, arts and culture, sport and accommodation.
The Office of Tourism and the Visitor Economy in Austrade leads the development of tourism and visitor economy policy for the Australian Government, delivers tourism initiatives and provides the Australian Government’s official tourism statistics.
Our two branches lead on tourism policy and work with a range of Commonwealth agencies, States and Territories, industry and researchers to develop creative and effective policy outcomes for tourism. We use insights from this engagement, along with tourism data, to support the Minister for Trade and Tourism and Assistant Minister for Tourism in our collective work to deliver THRIVE 2030, the national visitor economy strategy. We work with Austrade’s Communications and Marketing Branch to communicate Australian Government activities related to tourism to our stakeholders.
We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic person to fill a Policy and Communications Senior Advisor role at the EL1 level for an ongoing role. This is a mixed duties position.
The Policy and Communications Senior Advisor will support portfolio ministers and the Commission’s engagement through the provision of policy advice as well as communications support for the Office of Tourism and the Visitor Economy.
A merit list will be created from this process and will be used to fill future vacancies, both ongoing and non-ongoing.

DUTIES INCLUDE:
- Leading the preparation of high-quality, innovative and data-driven policy advice and briefings for the Minister, Assistant Minister and Senior Executive to inform and influence government deliberations on visitor economy issues.
- Maintaining professional and constructive relationships with stakeholders in industry, state, territory and Commonwealth governments, to influence a range of policy and programs that impact the visitor economy.
- Providing advice on communications outreach and supporting communication functions across the Office of Tourism and the Visitor Economy, in collaboration with Austrade’s Communications and Marketing Branch, including through the development and delivery of a regular visitor economy newsletter with thousands of subscribers.
- Establishing plans to deliver objectives in an uncertain and fast paced environment.
- Overseeing governance and reporting for the national visitor economy strategy, THRIVE 2030, and supporting for whole-of-government and national committees, such as the Tourism Ministers’ Meeting, Australian Standing Committee on Tourism.
- Leading and building the capability of team members to support the duties listed above.
- Other duties as required.

ELIGIBILITY:
