Primary objective
To use your environmental science and regulation skills to effectively and efficiently administer a wide range of environmental
legislation, including the Environment Protection Act 2019, the Waste Management and Pollution Control Act 1998, the Water Act
1992,



and the Environment Protection (Beverage Containers and Plastic Bags) Act 2011.

Context statement
The Environment Division in the Department of Lands, Planning and Environment supports various statutory decision makers,
including the Northern Territory Setting Protection Authority (NT EPA), the Controller of Water Resources, the Chief
Executive and Minister to perform their statutory functions under the environmental laws listed above.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Administer the Territory’s environmental legislation in line with the Division’s business plan and approved processes.
2. Review information and make recommendations on environmental assessments, approvals, and licences in line with the

Division’s policies and procedures.
3. Undertake compliance and enforcement action, including conducting audits, inspections and investigations into incidents of

non-compliance in line with the Division’s policies and procedures.
4. Prepare licences and approvals, and produce briefings, reports and other environmental material within set timeframes.
5. Provide specialist advice to the team as required and support junior officers in a mentoring role.
6. Provide,



coordinate or review regulatory advice to internal and external stakeholders.
7. Assist in pollution hotline response services as required in line with the Division’s policies and procedures.
8. Engage with the Division’s values, including to be aligned, caring, courageous and take responsibility.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. A degree relevant to any of the following: science, environmental management, environmental engineering or environmental

law or similar qualifications.
2. Proven significant experience in the environmental management of one or more of the following: waste, pollution, water

discharges or contaminated land.
3. Ability to interpret and apply legislation and comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the principles of environmental

regulation including environmental assessment, environmental auditing, compliance and enforcement, regulatory investigations
and the development of regulatory guidance.

4. Highly developed and accurate oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, including effective negotiation skills and
experience providing advice to decision makers on complex environmental or regulatory matters.

5. Demonstrated ability to lead, encourage and mentor staff, and work effectively as a team champion, within diverse groups.
6. Holder of a driver’s licence and capacity to work outside of normal work hours, including regional and remote travel.

Desirable
1. Certificate IV in Government Investigations or similar
