The General Surgeon will provide expert medical assessment and management of patients within the general surgery service in the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD).
The General Surgeon is responsible for the provision of specialist general surgery services to emergency patients, inpatients and outpatients at the relevant Hospital.
The General Surgeon will ensure provision of high quality general surgery services to all patients within the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District.
Scope of Clinical Practice may be varied to include District Scope of Clinical Practice as agreed with the Director of Clinical Services and as approved by the Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee (MDAAC).
The General Surgeon will proactively:
- Support the development of general surgery services
- Support and facilitate a culture of learning and best practice
- Support and develop general surgery research within the department
The expectation of a Zero Hour Reliever is to assist with planned leave coverage and roster gaps as they arise. There is no ability to build a waitlist.
The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) has responsibility for health services in the Illawarra Shoalhaven region - a catchment area extending along the coastline from Helensburgh in the north to North Durras in the south with over 400,000 residents. This catchment covers four Local Government Areas (LGAs): Wollongong, Kiama, Shellharbour and Shoalhaven. ISLHD operates eight hospital sites in Coledale, Bulli, Wollongong, Port Kembla, Shellharbour, Berry, Shoalhaven and Milton Ulladulla,
and community health services operating from approximately 58 locations across the region. ISLHD is one of the region’s largest employers with a workforce of more than 8,500 staff.
Wollongong Hospital is the largest of Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District’s eight hospitals, treating more than 48,000 patients annually. It is the region’s tertiary referral hospital servicing a population of more than 400,000 people. The Wollongong Hospital is a 500+ bed centre which provides both general and specialty medical and surgical services including adult intensive care and coronary care units.
An academic suite at Wollongong Hospital supports both the Graduate School of Medicine and School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Wollongong. As such there are teaching and research opportunities through the UOW Graduate School of Medicine.

**Selection Criteria**
- Specialist registration or eligible for specialist registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in General Surgery and/or equivalent specialist recognition.
- Evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices consistent with the scope of practice requirements of the position.
- Proven capacity and/or experience in the provision of effective high quality services, demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including evidence of participation in quality improvement activities relevant to the specialty.
