East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust

Ipswich

Job overview

We are seeking several Clinical Fellow colleagues to join our friendly and proactive department at Ipswich Hospital, part of East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust (ESNEFT). This new post has been developed as we expand our junior doctor workforce.

These posts are intended to start August 2021 for a fixed period of 6 months initially, this will be extendable to 12 months by mutual agreement.

We can offer a chance to consolidate anaesthetic experience gained at core training level or beyond and gain focussed subspecialty experience in emergency/trauma anaesthesia, obstetric anaesthesia, major spinal surgery, intensive care, regional/acute pain or simulation/education.

Applicants are expected to be GMC registered doctors and have completed at least 2 years’ experience in anaesthesia.

These posts are trust-funded posts at equivalent of CT3 level and are designed with those who have completed core training in Anaesthetics in mind.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicants will take part in a rolling rota comprising normal days, long days and nights alongside deanery trainees and specialty doctors.

The out of hours cover is arranged across 3 areas (intensive care, theatres and obstetrics) and applicants may be expected to work on call within any of these tiers. Competency/experience across these areas will be assessed at interview. A full induction and assessment of competence will be made before any solo on call activity at the start of the post.

Working for our organisation

East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust (ESNEFT) provides hospital and community health care . We serve a wide geographical area with a population approaching 800,000 residents. We deliver care services from two main hospitals in Colchester and Ipswich, six community hospitals, high street clinics and in patients’ own homes. We have nearly 10,000 staff, with an annual budget of over £650 million. We are the largest NHS organisation in the East Anglia.

We are building for better care with an exciting capital development programme across our sites – totalling £100million over the next five years.

We are building a new elective orthopaedic centre for ESNEFT at Colchester Hospital. It will be one of the biggest centres in the country and will ensure we can retain complex and low volume cases locally for the people we serve.

We are also now building a £7million specialist interventional radiology and cardiac angiography unit at Colchester.

At Ipswich we are investing £35million in a new Emergency Department and co-located Urgent Treatment Centre, with additional diagnostic imaging kit (MRI and CT). There’s a £5.3million molecular diagnostic laboratory soon to open at Ipswich, and works begins soon for a new Breast Care Centre and a Children’s Unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

During normal working days successful appointees will be encouraged to select one or two subspecialty interests to develop from the areas listed:

- Obstetric anaesthesia

- Major spinal surgery

- Intensive Care

- Regional Anaesthesia

- Acute Pain

- Simulation/Education

Although this is not a recognised training post, the daytime activity will allow development of skills in the chosen subspecialty interest (from above) with opportunities for quality improvement and audit. Candidates will be supported in preparing for appropriate professional examinations and specialty training applications. The hospital has its own Simulation centre and successful applicants would be encouraged to become involved in delivery of simulation teaching within the department and wider trust.
