The Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences sits at the intersection of the arts, design, science, and technology and plays a critical role in engaging communities with contemporary ideas and issues. Established in 1879, the museum includes the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney Observatory, and the Museums Discovery Centre. The Museum is custodian to over half a million objects of national and international significance and is considered one of the finest and most diverse collections in Australia.
The Powerhouse Precinct at Parramatta is one of the largest cultural infrastructure projects currently being undertaken in Australia.
The project will transform and renew one of Australia’s oldest and most important cultural institutions and carry forward its legacy to reflect the changing needs of the contemporary communities of NSW.
The Workshop Preparator is responsible for construction, installation, dismantle and maintenance for the Museum's exhibitions, art commissions and projects. This includes but is not limited to; the creation of exhibition furniture, walls, fixtures and props, and the installation and dismantle of museum standard display cabinets and showcases.
We are creating a pool for casual roles to support the workshop team.

To be successful in this role you will need to possess the following skills, experience and attributes:
- Relevant qualifications in metal working, carpentry, painting, general construction or related fields.
- A minimum of five years’ experience in a workshop environment, involving carpentry and joinery, and other relevant trades is necessary
- Extensive knowledge of fabrication and construction techniques including experience in plasterboard wall installation, setting and painting, object support making including making Mounts from different materials like timber, metal, or acrylic
- Understanding and practice in safe object handling or willingness to undertake training.
- The position requires superior manual skills in a range of woodworking, metal working, and related trade areas. The occupant must have the skills to interpret plans and drawings and be able to clearly communicate ideas.
