The Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development
Australian Capital Territory
Graduate Development Program (GDP) 2022
We’re looking for fresh-thinking, innovative and high-performing Graduates to contribute to shaping the future of Australia’s infrastructure, transport, regional development, communications and creative industries.
We’re at the forefront of the Australian Government’s efforts to connect our communities, secure the nation’s economic future, improve living standards, provide access to high quality communication services and ensure all Australians can enjoy diverse artistic and cultural experiences.
We do this by building stronger communities through major infrastructure planning, investment advice and delivery,
transport system reform and strategic development of policies and programs.
We also set the course for Australia’s digital future, encourage participation and excellence in arts and culture, and work on policy that supports and protects our cultural heritage.
Wherever you start your public service career as a graduate, you’ll do meaningful work from day one, be asked to contribute, be recognised for your perspective and see the impact you can make in the Australian community we serve.
If you are seeking a career where you can make a difference in the lives of everyday Australians, you will find it at Infrastructure!
Why choose Infrastructure?
We are seeking graduates to join our 2022 Graduate Development Program with a vision of Australia’s future and a willingness to identify problems and implement innovative solutions. You will have the opportunity to work in a way that enriches our communities, empowers our regions and leaves a positive impact for generations to come.
The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications has a reasonably small group of graduates each year, which enables the Department to provide the highest quality, personable and tailored support to each incoming graduate. We understand that the transition from study to career can be a challenging one. For many, it is also the first time they have lived away from home, and most graduates are moving interstate. We work hard to make the whole process as easy as possible for you and offer a generous travel, accommodation and storage package. We also help you settle into Canberra with plenty of recommendations on housing, food, activities and experiences, with a generous relocation package to support you through the transition into life in Canberra.
The GDP is designed to add to the skills Graduates have acquired at university by developing professional public sector skills through a combination of work rotations, internal training and formal learning and development. The Department's GDP provides a unique 11 month accelerated career progression, a salary increase and advancement from the APS Level 3 to APS Level 5 on successful completion.
The key elements of the GDP comprises of:
- an 11-month generalist program that sources talent across all academic disciplines;
- three work rotations across the department (12 – 14 weeks each);
- commencement as an APS 3 employee;
- upon successful completion of rotations one and two, advancement to an APS 4;
- upon successful completion of the program, advancement to an ongoing APS 5;
- a structured learning and development program, which includes a formal qualification through a Graduate Certificate in Public Administration (the Graduate Certificate) delivered by the University of Canberra (UC);
- a Major Research Project, a component of the Certificate; giving Graduates the opportunity to meet and work with the Senior Executive Staff (SES) and to research a topic directly relevant to the department and its outcomes; and
- participation in the coordination of corporate events including the department's Social Club and Christmas Party.
During the Graduate Program, you will have access to career coaching and professional development opportunities. Upon completion of the program consideration for financial support and paid leave to undertake further study in relevant areas, and broader Australian Public Service and mobility and career progression within the department.
